We hooked up our good stereo to our computer and thought we'd just load all our CDs on to our computer to make them easier to play and access (they are stored in a REALLY high cupboard).

I don't know anything about music technology and we don't have an iPod or any kind of MP3 player. We've just been ripping the CDs as audio files but a friend mentioned he thought that would really slow down our computer.

Do I want to rip these as MP3 files? Does that make them smaller? Will they still play off our computer fine as MP3s? And, if we ever get an iPod for the car or something, I assume we'd want the CDs in a compatible format?

no clue.. all mine go into windows media player and I haven't had problems.. I would just keep doing what you're doing.. and if you notice a problem.. you can remove some of the files or try converting them.
