Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I had the oddest thing happen today.

I was discussing the options I was looking at for the next school year with my dh over a rare lunch out together. I had been describing the Serendipity website and plans to him, and how I was waffling about using them. I am worried that I will drop the ball with this type of plan and "nothing" will get done. He told me that he trusted that I would do what was best and to let him know what I decide. I said I would pray on it some more.

At the end of the meal we were given our fortune cookies. And mine said...

"Follow your heart and your life will be wondrous! Serendipity!"

Huh!

Sounds like God answered your prayers in a most wonderfully fun and creative way!!!

Well, honestly I'd not want to read anything into a fortune cookie. I'm not saying that's what you (the original poster) are doing, but just felt compelled to put these 2 concerned cents in for some reason. I thought fortune cookies were only OK because we don't take them seriously as sources of knowledge of the future or of the way we should go. I wouldn't think we should, for example, look at the horoscope column in the newspaper for some acceptable reason (say, researching an article about belief in such things, or even to point out to someone how silly it is to follow them,) not trying to know the future/make decisions based on them, etc., but then say, "But wait... this under 'my' sign sounds like an answer to what I was wondering about!" and take it as an answer from God.

I definitely didn't see LeeAnn's story as an indication of basing decisions on knowledge of the future (i.e. fortunetelling through fortune cookies) - in fact I think it was all quite "serendipitous" - sort of a double irony in the whole situation when you consider what serendipity means. Thanks for sharing it. I got quite a kick out of it.

What a productive discussion you and your husband had and it was beautiful to hear how he trusts your judgement in this matter. Taking it into prayerful consideration like you indicated you are doing will help guide you. We always hope for real and visible signs (coincidence or God-incidence?). A heart guided by Christ will lead you to the right decisions.

LeeAnn, praying for you in your discernment here, too.

I definitely wasn't taking advice from a fortune cookie! I just found it a humorous, ironic and a bit "serendipitous"!

I think it is a neat coincidence. YOu obviously weren't seeking an answer from the cookie; you just happen to be discussing it with your dh and opened the cookie. I think of it more as a nice sign because you weren't looking for the answer there.

Cute story!

I have a similar story. One day I was out to lunch with my best friend (something we don't get to do often). As I read my fortune cookie she was looking through her diaper bag. She quickly looked at me and said, "I forgot my wallet." I handed her my fortune and then we both started laughing. My fortune read, "Be generous. Pay for this meal."

Prayers for your discernment.

Mostly I'm surprised there was actually the word "serendipity" in a fortune cookie -- ours are usually weirdly-worded ones.

Seriously though, that's a great coincidence. And sometimes God does speak to us in mysterious ways...

Praying for your discernment as well, LeeAnn.

I was quite surprised by "serendipity" also. Not a commonly used word.

I am still trying to figure out what to do, but I think I am finding a path using the Serendipity site and unit studies I used previously with my teens when they were little and some lapbooks I have foudn that tie in nicely with the Serendipity themes.

Thank you for the kind thoughts.
