Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Two Christmas gifts have "heck", "darn", etc. in them. One, Calvin and Hobbles book, I am overlooking as I tend to scan over those words myself. But a relative gave us the "Madagascar" movie which has quite a few of the above words and even "darn them all to heck." I think that's going to give bad ideas to ds (7). It seems that hearing those words are worse than reading them. I'm going to put the movie away and only bring it out if that relative asks for it the next time they come (everyone here loved it but me). The movie is cute but they easily could've left out the cursing-light.

My question is how do I explain myself to DS (7)? I'm not too good at expressing myself in speech. I've told him some things just aren't for him but I can see he'd like a little more of the "why". I already made him stay out of the tv room when uncle was here the past week because I can't preview everything uncle watches and I definately do not trust uncle to monitor things and turn it off if things aren't ok for DS. (They all left this morning, by the way.)

So for future things, and for the movie, what do I say?

Kelly,
I deal with this subject often at our home. One thing I have told our children is that the people who made this movie were not seeking to glorify God. They made the movie to make a profit and for their own egos. The Bible tells us that we can know whether something is good by the fruit it produces. If they repeat the uncharitable unkind words they hear in an offensive program, they are not pleasing God. St. Paul reminds us:
Ephesians 4:29: No foul language should come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for needed edification, that it may impart grace to those who hear.

Our children received some new Veggie Tales dvd's for Christmas. This is the first year they did not receive a culturally popular video with an offensive word or a two. When our children ask why they cannot watch shows or read books that have "just one or two bad words," I use the dog poo analagy. I forget where I read/heard about it (Dr. Ray Guerendi maybe?). It goes like this: If I were to bake a batch of brownies and added just one teaspoon of dog poo, would you still eat them? Of course, that is repulsive that they reply "no." Ask them why?   It is only a "little tiny bit?" Well that little bit of poor language in a movie or book ruins the entire thing, just as the offensive teaspoon in the brownie batter ruins the treat.

Another question my husband and I ask when our children want to watch a program with poor language is "if they would watch the dvd with Jesus sitting next to them?"

Blessings,

Thank you, Kristina. I'll internalize your wise words and I really like the dog poo analogy. God bless you.
