I just wanted you and your family to know that your FIL was the example given in Sunday's homily about truely loving your neighbor. His life and actions are still touching so many people in a very profound way. -Annie

Oh, yes...every once in a while his heroic actions come to mind, and I think of the need for real role models for all of our sons...How blessed we all are to have known him through you!

A certain 8yo turned to whisper the same thing to me when the gospel was read last Sunday. For my children, he will always be the first thing that comes to mind when they hear "lay down your life for your friends."

Annie, thanks for letting me know! Moved to tears here.
Really, ladies, it's such consolation. We received a call letting us know that a parish in Boise, Idaho had posted something about our Papa in the bulletin!! We couldn't believe it.
On this past Sunday as I was reading the readings from our Kids Magnificat in the car on the way to Mass, I was taken by surprise... and couldn't read for a while.
(Providentially, this gospel was the gospel at my college graduation, our wedding, and Dad's funeral. God really wants to bring this Gospel message in the forefront of our lives.)
The boys and I are hopefully spending next year doing a themed unit each month just about him (flying, soldier, hero, coach, Eucharistic adorer, etc.)
and making notebooks, so my boys will never ever forget how spoiled God let us be with our Papa.

Maryan,
The bulletin article is lovely. Your fil has inspired so many in far away places.
How is Joseph and your mil doing? I think of them and say a prayer.

Thanks Cay! They miss him terribly, but their health is good. They both had a bad flu this winter in a drafty house, but recovered well.
My fil was in the middle of renovating their 1920s house when he died. The brothers are trying to finish it (my fil is very hard to replace). My mil has been living in a drafty construction zone for 8 months... and that's hard under the best of circumstances.
On Saturday, their sewer broke (from complications of crushing the old tank) and the brothers spent the past couple days at the site where their Dad died trying to fix it. At the same time, we heard his funeral Gospel on Sunday and of Dad's story retold in many places -- including Malaysia!
So there are many rough bumps and a lot of unfinished business (even things like the hundreds of thank you notes that I'm working through), but God keeps sending consolations. He seems to keep trying to tell us: "Yes, really... this was My Will, and I will bring a greater good out of it. Be consoled."

I know the boys and their families are a huge blessing to your mil right now. God bless you all!
When my mil died, I was so edified at how my husband and his brothers stepped up to the plate to care for their father.
God blesses families who raise their children in His word.
