Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi,

I made an initial intro on the "2009" page but had a few questions so thought I would re-intro here. I have 3 children: a daughter aged 10 in 4th grade, a son aged 8 in 2nd grade and a rough and tumble but super sweet and super busy 20 month old daughter. My older 2 attend our local Catholic school but I plan on starting to HS in the Fall for a variety of reasons. I've been reading the topics for a few weeks now and you ladies sure have a wealth!!!! of knowledge. I feel like I've come into this HS realm when my kiddos are getting on up there in 5th grade and 3rd grade next year so it's a little overwhelming looking at all the curriculum and trying to decide what will be best for them and our family. I don't want to get this wrong but it seems that there will be some trial and error.

Anyway, in reading some of the topics, I've run across a few words I was hoping someone could further explain to me. I *think* I know what they mean but not 100% sure.

Lapbook: I saw the fold outs on a blog but is that something the kids put together for various studies they're doing? Do these require a lot of parent planning?

REAL Learning: Is that Elizabeth's book?

Rabbit Trails

I'm looking forward to our HS journey but as with anything new there is quite the apprehension about how all this will work.

Thank you for all the wisdom and guidance,

Kathryn

PS: Anyone else from the Dallas/Fort Worth area here?

Kathryn, welcome again and we're glad you're here as you begin your homeschool journey. I cna relate...we brought our oldest home starting in 4th grade and 2 years later his younger brother came home starting 3rd. So we kind of had a gradual intro. My youngest two have homeschooled from the beginning.

To answer some of your specific questions:

I guess I would say that lapbooks are little portfolios of learning for a specific topic. Many people do them for the subjects/topics they are learning. Others might use more a notebook approach, with pages that have similar parts all compiled in a binder where pages can be added. We make/use them sometimes but not regularly. They can involve quite a bit of mom prep time, but there are also numerous sources for downloading or purchasing templates and such ready to go.

-a whole Yahoo Group dedicated to lapbooking
blog with resouces on lapbooking - just found this one, it looks like good basic info.

Yes, Real Learning: Education in the Heart of the Home is the title of Elizabeth's books so when you see it written it could be referencing the book. The term "real learning" is also used to make a general statement about a style of learning within the home that is part of real life, incorporating our living into learning, not a textbook/classroom at home approach. It would include living books, hands-on activities, nature study or observational learning, etc.

- I don't think there is a clear-cut definition. Generally it is following the "interest" that is naturally generated when studying a topic. It often goes in various directions as you find new interesting connections and topics of interest. For example you read a book about young American girl during WWII and then go on to learn more about victory gardens, rationing, Air raid drills, Gold Star mothers, POW camps, etc.
