Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK, this is the deal. I have had an Ipod for several months now. Never used. Not once. Every time I go for a walk or do the dishes, I think it would be good to have my Ipod. Well, I don't have anything in it! What do you have in yours? any recommendations? anything I should not miss?

Or maybe I should put the question another way. I have never payed much attention to music. My sister says that I don't have a musical past Oh, and remember that I am not American. So if you have to suggest some music to "educate" me about music of your youth, what would it be?

I also welcome recommendations of audiobooks, Catholic music, podcasts, etc.

Thanks,

I might be getting one for Mothers Day. Shhhhh..I am not supposed to know...
I am a little nervous about learning how to get stuff on it. But, am excited to listen to Fr. Jack's homilies(http://catholichomily.org/), music from spiritandsong.com(I have some fav's there), and some Relevant Radio.
That is all I can think of right now, that should(along with the learning curve ) keep me busy for years!!
Looking forward to other suggestions though...
Anne

I love to listen to Fr. Roderick's podcasts. He has a few, but my favorite is "The Daily Breakfast" He's a Dutch priest and is very inspirational and down to earth. He loves video games, movies & TV and I enjoy his recommendations / insight. He started SQPN.com - if you visit the site, you'll find lots of great Catholic podcasts.

If you go to Amazon, they have a bunch of free MP3 samplers that give you a variety of music. You have to kinda search for them, but I recently downloaded a sampler of Christian music, and another of jazz.

Storynory.com has great stories for kids. My boys love to listen to them in the car.

OH! And NPR has many podcasts available - I love "This American Life" the most. And the New Yorker does a monthly fiction one, where an author chooses a short story from the archives and reads it and discusses it.

I download all these podcasts through iTunes.

Have fun! I never thought I "needed" an iPod, now I use it daily.

Do you knit or do crafts? There are a ton of knitting podcasts.

Also, do a search in the iTunes store for npr or bbc. Lots of great stuff there.

Do you know about librivox? www.librivox.org. You can get free audiobooks in your iTunes. (Little Women, my personal fave is there!)

Just last night I used mine to listen to one of the presentations from the IHM conference last year. I find it inspiring to be able to go back to those presentations when I am feeling overwhelmed and need a little boost or perspective.

If you use iTunes you can search on Catholic pop music or Christian pop music and find some good stuff.

As far as music goes, Marie Bellet is my absolute favorite "mom music"! She is having a Mother's Day special on her cds.

I always forget to use my iPod (I have one the shuffles randomly and is really small, so I don't really like it), but some of the music I have is:
Jimmy Buffet- some songs need censoring, I can give you specifics if you want but most are just plain fun!
Bare Naked Ladies- don't let the group name fool you, they have a lot of fun songs that we all enjoy such as Another Postcard, One Week, If I had a Million Dollars and Pinch Me
Pierce Sisters- a trio of Catholic sisters who sing beautifully (I think Ignatius carries their cd)

and of course, no iPod would be complete without the Beatles!
Have fun!

As far as music, we all love Fernando Ortega. Christian, soothing, and sometimes fun.

Big Beatles fan here too--perfect for walking or washing dishes...or anything really.

And I second the AudioSancto sermons someone mentioned earlier as well.

You can also download EWTN programming. I do this with the Journey Home. I love that show and never get to see it. Also, I purchase seasonal and classical music (Advent, Lent, Easter, etc.) to play on my iHome. I like to load talks on CD from conferences, etc. I never knew how much I needed an iPod until I received one as a gift a couple of years ago. Oh, and audio books!! Great for long walks.

OK. I think I am covered in the catholic department. What about music? I love the idea of Marie Bellet. I have always wanted to buy her cds and never got around to it. And I love the Beatles!

What else? I will be looking into Fernando Ortega and the Bare Naked Ladies (did I get that right?).

Any specific audio books you have enjoyed lately?

Jo, (are you named after the Jo of Little Women?)I do know about Librivox but have never used it. How do you find the readers? are they good?

Actually, my name is Jodi, but as a child I always wanted to be called Jo. (It's what I called myself in my head.) When my oldest was 18 months old, we moved from our hometown to San Diego, California for a wonderful opportunity. As a sort of gift of gratitude, I cut off my long hair and donated it to Locks of Love. I decided that in San Diego, I'd start calling myself Jo. Now my facebook page is Jo and people from my high school that are facebook friends call me Jo!

Librivox, all you do is go to www.librivox.org. Search in the catalog for the book you want. Under the title (when you go to the page for the book) are different options. You can click on subscribe in iTunes. If you want more than one chapter a day, just go to iTunes, click on the little arrow next to the title (oh, in the podcast section of iTunes) and it will expand to show all the chapters. Either click the button that says get all or click on individual chapters.

Jo

My dd has introduced me to some great Christian rock...Brandon Heath and Superchick are big big hits here.

I love Heath's song "Wait and See".

I'll just butt in about Marie Bellet. I have 2 of her CDs. Ordinary Time and What I Wanted to Say. Out of the two I prefer What I Wanted to Say. Her newer CDS Lighten Up and New Springtime (?) are supposed to be more upbeat. You really can't go wrong with any of hers. Someone I know listens to What I Wanted to Say when she's not too happy with hubby iykwim.

Oh and in your original post you asked about music of our youth, well, let's just say, most of mine is not suitable for little ears.    Thank goodness our God is a God of second chances!!
