I hate calling them just plain yellow but it is just true. Ugh. I am nursing and don't know of any whitening methods sure to be safe for my baby. If you do, please let me know, but in the meantime...
Anyone know what to look for if I'm going to purchase lipstick (haven't worn in years, mainly because avoiding the bad chemicals costs more,) but do not want to emphasize the yellowness of my teeth? At minimum, don't want them to look worse. Would be nice if something might actually make them look better! Or is any lipstick, even clear gloss, just going to draw more attention to a bad situation?
They are definitely on the yellow side, not gray. With my skin tone I can't wear things with orangey/yellowy undertones so I hope those are not the only thing for my teeth. And I was looking for subtle color, not dramatic.

Are your teeth naturally more yellowish, or is it possibly staining from drinking tea/coffee/coke etc? If it was staining you could use bicarb...Lipstick with cool/blue tones is supposed to help with more yellow [ie natural!] teeth.

yes, you don't want to add any yellowy color it will blend with the yellow of the teeth and make it seem more yellow.. you want something that will contrast more with yellow.. so a nice clear color..
And I've heard that brushing with magnesium oil helps whiten.

I haven't tried it, but I read that rubbing the inside of orange peel (the white part) on your teeth will help whiten them.

I found some advice here which says stay clear of yellows, oranges and go for blue undertones, plums, etc. Glossy also helps minimize the yellow. I'd choose a colored gloss, especially since you haven't worn anything in a while.
I'm going to recommend what I use. I never wear lipstick, but I have worn this Clinique "Almost Lipstick" Black Honey for years (since I was 14). It looks really dark in the tube, but not on. It's been in different forms over the years, first as a pot gloss, but now it's in a "lipstick" type form tube. Try it on before you say no.

Mauve, plum, and berry colors are best to not accentuate the yellow. Ask me how I know.
Having seen you in person, I think a nice light berry color would look really nice on you.

Oh, I have to second this. I have been a Black Honey fan for years, as well. Yes, it looks scary in the tube -- but it is so very flattering when you get it on. It's also not lipstick -- it's more like a clear gloss without too much shine.
Another specific recommendation I can make is by Flirt, a line sold only at Kohl's. It's a gloss in a squeeze tube and the color is Mulberry Marvel. I wear this almost every day -- it's another that looks nasty in the tube but really pretty on. A little more subtle yet shiner than Clinique's Black Honey. It tastes like vanilla, too, if you're into that.

Thanks for the advice, ladies.
I always remember buying an "Almost Lipstick" at Macy's in Manhattan for $13 in 1994. The first morning I went to use it I rolled it up too high and it broke off and fell on the bathroom floor. I don't think it was the product's fault but nonetheless I stuck mostly with the 99-cent Wet and Wild type stuff for a long time after that!
Anyway, Black Honey looks interesting. I didn't look at the ingredients yet though; I want to avoid phthalates, parabens and whatever else is scary.
I have this in mind: http://www.physiciansformula.com/en-us/productdetail/organic -wear/02273.html
probably in rose but maybe in plum. I will have to ask my husband what he thinks (he usually likes purples on me...) "Light berry color" does sound like the kind of thing I have been drawn to before, Philothea.
Oh, I did buy some Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer in watermelon tonight, but after I brought it home it became clear someone had already opened it :(

I like Burt's Bees lip shimmer and regular lipsticks. Its the only make up I wear with regularity (and I use their tinted moisturizer as a light foundation for picture days or special occasions). I really like it, and it cost a fraction of the fancy organic cosmetic line sold in our health food store.
