My ds (8) has discovered Calvin and Hobbes. Are there any similar
books or comic strips that he might enjoy?

My dd (8) and especially by ds (10) enjoy the old Peanuts books that we have. It's fun for me to see them read them since (one of) my sisters and I used to read them all the time. (On a side note, we had so many Peanuts books when I was little because my dad once mentioned that he liked Peanuts. Well, guess what he received for every occasion for many years after that!

I second Peanuts!

My older kids like Bloom County, but it gets political, and occasionally off-color. The Far Side is usually available in calendar form, but I see that this year's calendar is called "mating rituals". I'm pretty sure it's fine, but the title might be off-putting
