Do you have a kid friendly recipe for a rice dish or a fish dish that is suitable for breakfast?? Or better even, a cookbook that would have many recipes for rice or fish at the breakfast table?

We can't seem to make it through the morning w/o a whallop of protein at breakfast. I am serving eggs too much I think and breakfast meat is great but served over and over again it can be too fattening (for me!).

I could eat any kind of fish or rice at breakfast but my kids will be skeptical I'm sure. OH and I cannot serve any cheese at all because of dairy sensitivities here- but oh I wish I could!

MacBeth,
I found a book _Japanese Homestyle Cooking_ that I thought was interesting because I'd never actually thought to connect the words "Japanese Cooking" with "Homestyle" so I'm off to give that a try.

But I was actually wondering if anyone here had actually gotten some particular recipes to work with their family. I KNOW it's a long shot of course ! My husband will think I'm crazy too because there really isn't a place in the country much further from the ocean than where we currently live.

Is there anyone else out there that is so food dependant? We can't survive the day even stretching an hour past a mealtime and would completely melt down w/o some protein at the meal. I feel so abnormal!

We are totally food dependent. We have to eat five times a day, probably because as vegetarians we don't eat as much protein as other people. I'm trying to think of a good recipe, but my kids are mostly addicted to yogurt at breakfast.

I'll keep thinking, but have you considered tofu? I knew a lady who used to scramble it like eggs for breakfast. It's easy to disguise as ricotta, but offhand I can't think of any breakfasts with ricotta.

We've had kedgeree - I think its traditional English food .

Here is a recipe - we have used tinned tuna in place of the smoked fish.

Leonie ... dear ... yuck . Kedgeree with tuna? What on earth would be the point of making lovely kedgeree without the smoked haddock, which is the best bit . Unfortunately nobody else in my household likes kedgeree , but if they did I wouldn't put the curry powder in (at least, not for breakfast!). Of course, the other good English alternative would be kippers (smoked herring?), but I'm not sure they would appeal to American - or Australian - taste buds <g>. On the extravagant side, but scrambled eggs with smoked salmon are delicious, though Jewish dh considers it a waste of good smoked salmon!

If you're going to do smoked salmon, put lox on a bagel! I usually use cream cheese, but I've seen it done with butter as well. And the kids always beg for bites.

Another idea, in Hawaii people eat fried rice for breakfast. I think it's even on the McDonald's breadfast menu.

rice and fish on the breakfast table

try rice with

sardines in tomato sauce, or in olive oil
smoked salmon loaf
crunchy anchovies (sold dried in packets in asian stores, korean or japanese), toast in a skillet with the teeniest bit of oil
grilled fish -- we like whole fish, but if your family doesn't, you can use fillets that have been marinated in olive oil and salt and pepper for 15 minutes or so before cooking. sprinkle lemon juice on before eating.

does it have to be plain cooked rice? you could have rice noodles in soup, again with some grilled fish, or grilled mochi (rice cakes) dipped in some soy and/or wrapped in some nori (seaweed is very nutritious!), or Chinese congee (dried scallops and/or shrimp are an acquired taste for some but they make some of the best congee)....

Hi Amie,

I'm just wondering what your kids are having for breakfast these days . My dc are always STARVED by about 10 & it's pretty disruptive to be eating continuously the entire morning ... I've been thinking about yogurt since that has a decent amount of protein. Maybe we can mix in grapenuts or something like that? Anyone else have yogurt for breakfast? Is it worth making it? I'm considering getting this yogurt maker from Amazon. Thx!

What about lox? Smoked salmon sliced real thin. Dave loves it . It is popular in NY for breakfast with a bagel and a shmear.

We are still in a food RUT. I would gladly break free and be a wild woman, but no one else will come along. I served grits the other day, a dish I grew up with and no one would even give them a chance. I even served them with butter and honey.

We eat all day too. Still. However, part of me is hoping that getting a MROL folder up and running will perhaps level us out a bit. I have hope!

Hi Amie,

I'd like to hear about your MROL folder too. I read the book last year and am still trying to put together a rule we can stick with.

As far as fish and rice? Never heard of having that for breakfast except for lox. We do make protein smoothies for breakfast. I'm also trying to find some recipes to make some low carb (add protein powder) fiber muffins (using flax meal). We add flax oil to our smoothie before blending and I've found that this along with the protein powder helps keep us full for a while.
Also adding flax oil and proteing powder, wheat germ, bran to the breakfast meals that are already accepted may be helpful too.

Over time I have been able to break free of the dry cereal rut. My goal has been to increase protein in the hopes of decreasing the all day grazing. I get tired of picking up and having my meals picked at.
Eggs and sausage (the neighbor made it and I hear it is quite good. ) The dd#3, dd#1 and Rick tend to wake very hungry so having cheesy eggs and cereal and meat and fried potatoes is not unheard of.Dd#2 can tolerate toast or cereal, nothing more at first.

When dd#1 was small and not growing I made homemade custard, with extra eggs for protein, bread pudding and a peanut butter lollypop (Peanut butter on a spoon)all worked. The kids often had to have their serving of protien (nuts, eggs, meat roll up, whatever)before fruit, muffins or other snacks.
Even though there is much whining, I have at times--my grumpier times-have scheduled a snack so all day is not an issue.If they know snack was in 30 minutes, they could wait, miserably, for the next feeding.

BTW-
I love grits--and I am the only one that eats them. I think I disgust the rest of the family for my affection for hot cereal. Of course, this mostly vegetarian (eat my homegrown now) has been cooking meat for them for years so they do not grumble too loudly.

how about rice pudding? you could make it with the regular milk, but for a change you could try making it with coconut milk.

my kids sometimes enjoy glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk and water, then sprinkled with some kind of chocolate (Quik, or a malted chocolate powder like Ovaltine or Milo) or plain sugar on top. Thais have awesome rice dishes that they serve with fruit.

Fish tacos are yummy too, though I don't know if it's really for breakfast.... but then there *are* breakfast burritos....

Yes, I was going to mention that my mexican grandmother likes to have pintos for breakfast, as do my kids. We just try not to have them too many times in one day or too many days in a row.

Chocolate! Of course! Put chocolate on anything in my husband's family and it makes almost anything okay. I don't like 'overkill' myself but I bet my kids will. I'm going to try chocolate on their rice cereal or bread pudding and even the custurd idea. (thanks Viv!)

The cheese on the grits is worth trying. A little bit for the kids and dh I could do, just not at all for me and my little nursling.

I'm in the process of looking round here on the message board to read about other's adventures with the MROL folder before I post what I've been up to. Mine is a work in progess (I'm combining my scheduling efforts with Mary Ann Budnik's spiritual study "You Can Become A Saint" for personal improvement) but I can say that so far I suggest starting out with a 3" ring binder!
