Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was looking at our school year and we should be done or nearly done by the end of April.

We have a baby due in May, so we'd already planned on not starting the next year right away.

And I'm looking at the liturical wheel for the Year of Grace 2006 and noticed if we begin in June, we would be done by the end of Ordinary time before advent! We could take all of advent and lent off without feeling like we're "behind" or whatever.

Does anyone else do this? pros/cons?

I haven't tried anything quite like that, Martha, but I have a question. Would you then start the next school year in June, or earlier than that?

Yes, I'm thinking we would start up the next school year on June 5th (the Monday of the 9th week of ordinary time)and go through Dec. 1st (the last Friday of of the 34th week of ordinary time.) for a total of 26 weeks, which for us means done with 95% of the materials.

I figure we could do a unit study or finish up "stray" materials we didn't get around to do on our normal schedule during the brief 8 week ordinary time between advent and lent. (Our that last science chapter or the art book we didn't get around too..) That also falls into the time when I've always purchased the next years materials anyhow. (thank you tax refund!) This would be a prime time for evaluating the kids and materials after having had a break from them and a chance to revisit them.

Then we'd have lent and eastertime off (March, April, May)and begin the next grade level with the 9th week of ordinary time in June again.

In my state there are no requirements for home schooling, other than 180 days. BUT, that 180 days includes teacher days, field trips, sick days, etc.. So if I fall 10 days short or so of the 180 - I can just add in Sunday CCD classes or the week of the flu or something. Although I doubt it'll ever come up because we aren't required to keep a log of anything either, I'm just an over planner.

So... What does anyone think of this theory of mine?

But 26 weeks only adds up to 130 days, if you're talking about schooling 5 days a week. Our state requires 180 days of 4.5 hours and we do have to turn in attendance. I definitely include field trips, etc. since they would in public school, too, but I don't count sick days b/c they normally would have to make up any work missed on sick days.
However, if you're doing things centered around Advent or Lent that you could include as some of your days I'd count that.

It's a neat schedule if it works for you!

There's also an additional 8 weeks of ordinary time in January and February. I was thinking that would be perfect to have a short unit study, do any testing we want to get in, ect...
