that societies that function below replacement value soon die off! Now it is being acknowledged in the mainstream media. Thank you CNN!

Chris -- doesn't this amaze you? You'd think the powers that think we're overpopulated or think we need to have fewer babies to keep women free to work (!) would remember what happened in China -- they "ran out of" women for their men to marry because they had aborted or sent for adoption all their girls ... that Japan now needs to order folks to have babies ... and that Eastern Europe is still reeling for the Communist-enforced and encouraged abortion/few babies policies!

There's a scary corollary to this, discussed on Patrick Madrid's blog - he calls it Demographic Winter. Perhaps if people want to discuss it, though, it might be better discussed on a blog. (It's not overtly political, but the discussion could veer that way.)

Thank you so much, Nancy for considering this...and us.

Thanks Nancy and Jennifer... I had the same thought as I hit the "post" button, but my enthusiasm for the topic got the best of me! I did post this on my blog, as well.

Sigh...I knew it was a problem, but I didn't realize the implications for the future re: "obligation to die".

Makes you really think about how you want to teach your children.. and how you want your children to see you deal with your parents as they age.

I agree. Watching my parents care for their parents has certainly made all of my siblings happy to take in our parents if they need us to. In fact, I worry sometimes that we will fight over them!
However, I see both my parents and in-laws having an "I don't want to be a burden" attitude. I was able to talk to my mom about the importance of her and my dad choosing to live with family when the time comes...about how they can help us increase in charity and holiness and that I wouldn't want her to come be a spare worker or babysitter but just a part of the family. I don't know how to approach the same thing with my in-laws. Of course, it helps a lot that we get along well with all of them.
I see the "I don't want to be a burden" as an early form of the "obligation to die" mentality. In fact, in Hawaii it was mentioned that there was concern that older or very sick people from Asian cultures might feel that obligation if euthanasia were legal.

That's wonderful that you've been able to talk to your parents Rachel.
My grammy also lived with my parents.. actually from the time my grampy died.. she didn't want to be alone. So she was still quite active and healthy and was as you said.. a member of the family. My parents also have taken family (and others) in at various times. So I grew up with that.
I know my mom would come here if something happened to my step-dad (at the moment they're enjoying being snow birds in their RV).. but my MIL has a different attitude and would strongly disagree with that view of staying with family. But she wouldn't come here regardless and she has 1 son in the town she's living now and 1 closer than we are to what she would consider to be an acceptable town (medical services).
So I guess at this point I just am letting my BILs deal with that.

In regards to taking care of our elderly, I once read a neat quote in a homeschooling magazine:
I didn't institutionalize my children when they were young, so I hope they don't institutionalize me when I am old.
My extended familiy is working out living arrangements for my grandmother right now. She is suffering from congestive heart failure and just went blind in one eye. 2 months ago she was a healthy and extremely active 75 year old, suddenly she is infirm We offered to let her move in with us, but the family is worried that my house is too "busy" for her. She will probably move in with my parents about 20 minutes from us so the kids and I can spend time with her during the week while my parents are at work.
We were all flabbergasted. Her one daughter that lives in CA is pushing all of us to put her in an assisted living facility so she won't be a burden. We set her straight quickly though.
