My camera busted last sept (while at Disneyland....grrr)...and I was using the kids camera...and IT busted on Christmas eve......grrrr.
I LOVED my camera.....those who know me well...know I suffer now
Anyway......I am not wealthy enough to go to an SLR yet......or, at least to purchase the extra parts.
So, I must buy a high quality digital point and shoot.
I am looking at the under $500 cameras.
I must have a viewfinder (for my bad eyes) and I must have at least 12x optical zoom
I have found a few possibilites...and I want to know if any of you have these, or others you want to recommend....and why or why not.
Especially if you have Sony's Cyber-shot H50, I would like to hear about your experience. How are the prints coming out?
any by Canon or Panosonic?
Thanks...and if you have time, hurry and write! Please?
God bless!!

Ours is an Olympus Stylus 400, all-weather.. and it meets your qualifications.. we've really liked it. But I don't think they make that particular one anymore. We bought it 5 years ago for about $400 (hunting up the best deal online.. I believe that was below sticker price) The main thing I want in a new camera from what we've had is a faster shutter speed. But I don't know what they have out now. This one is still chugging along. But I'd really love to replace it before it dies

Jody, the camera I loved was an Olympus...but they do not seem to have anything out there now that I want ....mine was 5 years old when it quit.
I am reading reviews right now...it is so hard without "talking" to REAL people .or handling a camera
anyone else? Please???

I have an old digital camera and I lust after a digital point and shoot (no "lag" time between pressing the button and camera taking the shot). It is basically impossible to get one with the 12x optical zoom for under $500 though.
Anyway, I'm sure that you can do this, but I like to search on Amazon and then narrow the selection down on the left hand side. So I narrowed it down by optical zoom, price, and star rating as well as screen size.
Here are a few interesting choices:
Amazon search results
Canon Powershot
Panasonic 5 star rated Lumix
Another 5 star Panasonic Lumix

We just replaced our old Canon with a Panasonic Lumix. It's ok. I wanted instant point, push button, snap picture. It's better than our Canon by a lot, but it's still not instant. That is extremely frustrating to me. Also, low light conditions frustrate me - no flash equals blurry pic with realistic lighting, total flash equals washed out pic. I would love a camera that had a more intuitive management of the flash (or any management of the amount of flash) and more instant response in taking the picture....but....it was a very affordable camera and for the most part takes very good pictures. I haven't printed any pictures from it yet, so I'm sorry I can't give you a review of printed pics.
I'll be eager to hear if someone has found the perfect point and shoot!

Really they don't?
I was just looking at the Olympus SP-XXX-UZ series there's 3.. the 560, 565 or 570.
20x optical zoom, 10 mp, viewfinder, shutter speed as fast as 1/2000 second..
takes AA batteries so you can get them anywhere.
priced $400-450 on the manufacturer website which generally means you can get a better deal elsewhere probably down to $350 or so.. I haven't looked yet.

Jennifer these Olympus I'm looking at have what they call a "fill in" flash.. not sure what that means exactly but it's different than just on/off.

It has been a few weeks since I looked at the website, jodie.....not sure why I was disappointed. But, in the stores NO ONE has the Olympus cameras. Not sure why.
Oh, maybe I went to epionions.com and that caused me to be deterred...cannot remember.
I would rather buy in a store, than online....I like to hold the cameras.

We have a Panasonic Lumix FZ20 -- it's great for some things but not others. We're happy with it, but I'm still hoping to get a better one... one day...
