So, after 5 years of marriage, I've decided to buy an alarm clock.
Well, maybe.
I've also been thinking that a chiming clock would be a benefit--especially in helping me with prayer. Hearing a chime on the hour and half hour could potentially be great reminders for saying ejaculatory prayers, pausing a moment for a Hail Mary, or even a reminder for the Angelus so it doesn't have to get squished in with mealtime prayers.
Anyway, if there were a chiming clock with a customizable nighttime shut-off feature so that I knew the first time I heard the clock chime in the morning it was 6:00 or whatever, that would be awesome. I typically am a morning person and wake up with the sun. All summer, I was able to get up 6ish, have morning time to myself, prepare breakfast, and get everyone out of bed in time to make daily mass.
Granted, I also had a baby in September, but I do think that the morning sunlight has a lot to do with my internal clock. I SO enjoyed having that morning time and wouldn't mind sacrificing that hour of sleep, but well, like I said, I don't have an alarm clock.
After all this time without one, I don't think I would like any obnoxious beeping or the radio. A chime in the morning sounds potentially nice (I don't think I need a snooze button, but I really don't want to have something going off until I hit a button in case the baby is nursing but will let me get up when done, etc...).
So, I have no idea how to go clock shopping. Try googling "clock", lol. I'm not picky about the chiming clock being a wall, mantel, desk, etc..., but not being set on anything makes it even harder to find the "perfect" thing (at the perfect price). Dh thinks the classic Westminster chime is a bit boring, but tolerable if in the right clock. I would also prefer it not be made in China.
And, since my dream clock might be out of my price range atm, does anyone have "the best alarm clock in the world?"
Any thoughts on chiming clocks? Bad experiences? Anyone's uncle's IL's cousin able to get nice (even used) ones at a good price?  I just haven't the foggiest where to start!

I haven't done any clock shopping in a long time.. I'll think about if I know anywhere that might sell decent clocks.
But I have a reminder on my cell phone at 7am so that it rings once and then is silent.. and when I really need to get up (not being a morning person) I set the alarm clock (we have one with 2 alarms) to go off with the radio so that if I am nursing I can just listen to the radio.. it's not obnoxious or anything.. but it doesn't just go away if I need that bit more stimulous to get up.
I find it funny though that I can wake up to the radio at my alarm time but sleep through dh's alarm time.. same alarm, same radio station same volume etc.

here's one might be a bit expensive..
Cuckoo Clock that has the no chimes at night feature.
Not sure if this one has the auto on/off for nighttime Woodland Symphonic Clock

We have a chiming grandfather clock. It only chimes on the hour and does not turn off at night.
On the rare ocasion that my DH does not wind the clock, I have to check the alarm clock (does not have a lit face) throughout the night to see the time, kind of counter intuitive but the chime is soothing--the sound I expect.
Once I am used to the chime, I do not notice it unless the clock is not running.
We have a Westclock Big Ben in the kitchen and one of the bedrooms.They are small enough to see but not intrusive, and no snooze alarm.

I have seen several clocks with various sounds (the most popular amongst the crowd I know seems to the birds) that you can set to only "chime" (whistle that bird sound!) when it is light. My grandma has three of them - one is the birds, one is Christmas carols and I forgot the other one off-hand. All made by the same company.
I would love to have a mantle clock that has the same light feature. I like the sound of it throughout the day, but had one at my other grandmother's house that would wake me up every. fifteen. minutes. throughout the night - 18 years and I could never get used to it. I finally got brave enough to risk her wrath and turned off the chimes, but it was hard to remember to turn it back on in the morning! It is such a beautiful clock though, with such a beautiful sound!
I have gone years without an alarm clock, but when I had it, it was always set to a radio station. But now, we don't listen to the radio except in bad weather. The alarm clock sits on top of my dresser in the closet, all wrapped up and unpacked. :)

I would love a chiming clock...but DH doesn't like to hear the chimes. A customizable one would be great; let me know if you find one  , I haven't yet. But if you have to do a reg ol' alarm clock, could you get one that is also a CD player and set the CD to be the alarm? You could do beautiful music, or nature sounds, or a CD of great chimes. It woldn't help with the hourly chimes for prayer reminders though.

Jodie, that woodland symphony clock is SO sweet, but I called, and the chimes don't go off at night.
I also don't want the light sensor kind because I already have an internal light sensor, lol, and want the clock to wake me before the sun comes up!
ctrivette, I finally found these two that I really like and aren't TOO pricey (still, perhaps more than we should spend??) Mantle clock and Barrister Clock which are both made in Germany and have programmable nighttime switch off (one is personalized, the other is personalized for any 8 hour period).
It seems the personalized nighttime feature adds to the cost.
