What are some of your family rules in general?
Have you ever written them down and posted them (for yourself or your children)?
Which approach do you find yourself using most: "Thou shalt not" or "Thou shall"?
Are most of your rules ironclad and are ironclad rules really attainable in a family? (Here's my inconsistency creeping in...)

We do have Family Rules, Amie. We came up with a list and discussed them in detail over several teatimes about 7 years ago (which means some of my children weren't even born for the genesis and discussion and some don't remember it. But the big ones teach the littles.) I've laminated them and posted them on the refrigerator. I'm trying to cut and paste here.
We also taught them a little tune, using the key words in bold.
Family Rules
Peace
No fighting—this includes hands, feet or words.
· “The beginning of strife is like letting out water; so quit before the quarrel breaks out.”
· “A soft answer turns away wrath but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
· “Good sense makes a man slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.”
Encourage one another, using only words that build up and bless others. No teasing.
· “There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”
· “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, bring sweetness to the soul and health to the body.”
· “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
· “Encourage one another and build each other up.”
Asking
Don’t go anywhere or do anything outside the regular routine without asking and gaining permission.
Order
Be good stewards. Take care of what we have, using it wisely and responsibly. Put away your clothes, books, and toys and don’t leave messes for other people to clean. Also, do things in the proper order.
· “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.”
Respect
Be polite, particularly to your parents. Also, respect other people’s rights and property.
· “Honor your father and mother.”
Obedience
Honor and obey your parents, with a respectful attitude, the first time you are asked. Delayed obedience is disobedience.
· “Children obey your parents in the Lord.”

These are really beautiful, Elizabeth! Ours have never been that thoughtfully done. We've had several different versions over the years. On the last posted set of rules someone graffitied nose glasses and mustaches on the letters.
Apparently I forgot to make a rule about that.
Since the current theme in my life seems to be simplicity, we have one main rule that I keep emphasizing: Offer it all to Jesus. All the other rules seem to fall into place when they hold this ideal in their hearts. ('Course the ideal slips out of their hearts and heads often, mine too, so we all keep reminding each other.)
I haven't posted it since our printer has been broken, but it just occurred to me to have the school aged children write and decorate it. Then we can put them up in several places around the house.

That wasn't very far sighted of you, now was it?
Elizabeth I am stealing your rules! They are so beautifully presented and well thought out. I bet the Foss children are all wonderfully behaved.
Well done, as usual!

I think they are a combination of Eyre family rules and Clarkson family rules with a little Foss thrown in...can't really remember what's what...
