Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

whether for Christmas or birthdays....

Would you give a 'gift' that would be, say, lessons?
Swimming, art (pastel painting, in this instance), music, whatever. To me, I think those would be great 'gifts', not materialistic, but something they may not get to do otherwise. I was just told that that was 'animal-manure'. Just wondering if that would be a general consensus....

TIA!

eta: fwiw...I, personally would love to receive something like that....am I odd?

I think they are a terrific gift idea! I would just want to make sure it is in area of interest of the person you are setting them up for. I also think these would be fab for me!

I think it would be a terrific gift, but it would depend on the recipient. I would love to receive something like that, and so would my kids.

My brother would be offended -- it's just his personality.
He wouldn't feel loved if he couldn't hold onto a gift.

I also love receiving memberships as gifts. My parents have done a zoo membership for our family since Çolin was an infant and I am grateful EVERY year!

I have 4 kids and asked their Grandma to give them a week at drama camp over Christmas vacation. They are very excited because they know that I couldn't afford it-so that is all they want.

But as Melanie said, It would depend on the person. My little kids wouldn't like it-they want "something."

Personally, I would also love it!!

I think it's a GREAT idea!!!   My mom is giving my older 3 girls a session of ice skating lessons and they are so incredibly excited!

I think it's a terrific idea!

Could you extend the gift a little with more to unwrap, for instance, a new swimsuit or goggles with the swimming lessons or something else totally crazy but related like those mermaid flippers; new pastels or a new carrying case or wrap for the art lessons, even special stickers or music book for the music lessons...

I think it's a great idea BUT if someone sprung that on me I would probably be in panic mode trying to figure out a way to get the child there each week and fitting it into our schedule. Now if it's just me asking grandma or whoever to pay for lessons we already want and I'm willing to drive to, I am ALL for it.    I believe my children would love it too.

Right! This is something that has to be discussed the the parent, FOR SURE! I would be    if someone just gave some sort of lesson, etc. without consulting with us first.

Yeah, it's a great idea, but as Amy said, you should make sure it's something the recipient wants and is willing to drive to first!

That said, I have asked for zoo memberships, museum memberships, and money to sign up for various lessons for my kids lots of times!!

For dd's 10th birthday we gave her a sewing lesson kit. In a bag I put the fabric and a note invitng her to the lessons (I had planned the dates or they wouldn't happen). She was tickled pink, and we had lovely fall placemats on our table through Thanksgiving. There's an idea of how we did it.

This is not uncommon or bad. My parents have paid for two sessions of gymnastics for each of my girls to cover birthdays and Christmas this year. Last year, they gave me the money to get a gift card for our parks district that I could use for classes or swim days.

I second that it is something that needs to be agreed upon with the parents first. I knew a family through tee-ball where the aunt signed the little boy up for football without his parents' knowledge and told him at his birthday party. His parents were less than pleased and told her that she would be responsible for coming to every game and taking him to games and practices whenever they couldn't.

So don't feel like giving lessons is not a real gift. The person who told you that might feel that way personally, but not everyone does. And when kids get so much "stuff" already, do they really need more "stuff"?
