Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello everyone,

I should probably post this in Our Lady of Good Remedy, but I wanted it to actually be read

We recently adopted a kitten. I am allergic to cats, but only slightly and I know how to control my exposure, etc, to minimize the effects. DS8, however, has inherited my allergies, and isn't very interested in avoiding kitty (no name yet ) to keep the sneezing and wheezing at bay. He is our animal guy....is very gentle and sympatico with animals. We have chickens and he knows their moods when he picks them up, and one will let him hold her as long as he wants..I call him the "chicken whisperer"

So now we have the kitten, which is much more cuddly than a hen, but does anyone have any ideas/experience with limiting the allergy potential of a cat? I have been vacuuming a lot, dusting, and gave the kitten a bath tonight but does anyone have any tips, tricks, or advice about keeping the two sneezers in the house relatively happy?

BTW, I've been down this road before when I adopted 2 kittens while in college. I actually took them with me when I lived in Paris for a year! I just remember a lot of brushing and Benedryl and kitty queludes for the flight! I'm just hoping there's some "trick" to keeping cat dander and hair under control, like "rub kitty with Bounce dryer sheets" or something. Thanks (achoo) so much!

My dd is also allergic to cats and cannot keep her hands off of our cat. She loves animals in general. We didn't know about her allergy before we got the cat. One thing our allergist said was to keep the cat out of the bedrooms. Also, hand washing (Purell doesn't work with cat hair/dander) after handling and also do not handle the cat while in pajamas. So far she is doing OK but she takes Zyrtec most of the year for other allergies as well and it seems to help her along with regular vacuuming, etc.
Good luck!

I used to be terribly allergic to cats. When I was a kid my eyes would swell shut, I couldn't breathe, and I was sneezing constantly whenever I got around cats. I would take asthma and allergy medication. When I wasn't around cats I was fine--needed no medication at all. After becoming interested in natural medicine and wanting to get off medications, I found bioAllers Animal Hair and Dander.

This helps relieve the allergy and eventually get rid of it. I haven't completely gotten rid of my allergy but I don't have to use as much medicine when I'm around them. I have heard of it completely getting rid of the allergy from other people. I'm hoping one day mine will be gone!

Thank you Anne and Monique. I will probably try both, first on myself as an experiment, and then on ds. I used to have to use an inhaler, but haven't needed that so far.

My sis used acupunture to get rid of some of her allergies, esp. to shellfish and chocolate. I was way skeptical, but she did the allergan test on me where you try and resist pressure on your lifted arm while holding various substances in your other hand. We did it as a blind test, where I didn't know what was in my other hand. It worked... I couldn't lift my arm while holding cat fur wrapped anonymously in a tissue. I could lift other things, but the furr, corn and some other random thing made my resisting arm powerless. So strange!

Anyway, thanks again for the advice and here's to sneeze/wheeze-free days ahead!
