Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have an external hard drive? What model? What do you like about it? What are the things you wish were different? What should I be looking at in terms of features or are they all just about the same?

I have a desktop PC and I really need to get one because I've got 11,000 photos to back up and get off my desktop. My computer is running very slowly and I keep getting the "low disk space" warning.

The external hard drive holds more memory. Some can hold up to 500GB of memory. My pictures are about 1.25GB each.

I have a Western Digital external hard drive. The biggest hassle for me is that it's connected to my laptop, so I have to remember not to open iPhoto when it's not connected.

I think hard drives are very similar. I would go with a bigger name -- but know that ANY of them can fail.

So, unless you plan to keep the pictures on your computer AND the external, you still need a backup plan. I have all my pictures on the external, but my database for iPhoto just got corrupted, and it's taking me 7 days to upload my pictures to mozy.com. I should have thought of a backup plan BEFORE this happened, but other things kept distracting me.

I recently got a Maxtor 500 GB. I heard Maxtor was a good brand from dh's techie friends. I'm pleased with it- I don't use the software- just cut and paste the files I want backed up.

Unless you need it to be portable like a flash drive, don't get a portable one. They are smaller and sleeker, but more expensive.
