My sister stopped by this afternoon with some cookies for the kids. They were sugar cookies that she made from a pouch - all they need is water, I think. The boys ate them happily, and told her they were "better than the bakery cookies!" She said that she mixed them with her fingers and the boys said "Our mom never makes homemade cookies!" My sister said "She doesn't? What does she make?" They said "She makes machine cookies." "What are machine cookies?" "You know, she uses a mixer!"
So, apparently, since I use my Kitchenaid mixer, I don't make anything homemade. This strikes me so funny, especially since I don't use mixes for anything -- I make cookies, pancakes, waffles, bread and cakes from scratch.
Kids are funny.

Melanie -- that is funny! Mom used to call it "making it from scratch" which really didn't make sense to any of my siblings growing up!

I still call it that. I remember being at a friend's house and she suggested we make a cake (which I knew how to do) and she took out a box! I was so confused. Of course I had seen commercials for it, but I had never thought about anyone actually making a cake that way! I had no idea that our family's making everything from scratch was the exception not the norm.

It reminds me of the story of the girl who had a slice of cake at a potluck and asked the bringer what kind of cake it was because it was so good and she wanted to make it herself. She was told that it was a "scratch cake" and then was very disappointed because she went shopping and couldn't find a scratch cake mix.
She was probably the same girl who complained in the produce department about not being able to find potato jackets.

Aha... your cookies aren't "homemade" because they aren't "handmade", they are "mixermade" from scratch...but your sister's cookies are "handmade" from a box which makes them "homemade"...I get it...I think? 
Here's a favorite family story...one Thanksgiving many years ago my aunt, who is an amazing cook and baker, lovingly made a pumpkin pie from scratch. She cut up a real pumpkin, boiled it, mashed it, etc. She made a crust from flour, shortening, etc. This all took hours and effort. Well, her mother (my grandmother) tasted it and asked, "What's this?" My aunt replied, "Homemade pumpkin pie." To which my grandmother replied, "I like *real* pumpkin pie, don't we have any?" meaning she wanted pumpkin pie made from canned pumpkin baked in purchased frozen crust!
I never had homemade pumpkin pie again  .

Too funny, Angie!
So, this is kind of off-topic, but one of our family's favorite stories is how my dad's cousins from the city used to come to the country to visit him and his other cousins. His Aunt and Uncle owned a dairy farm where they would stay, and they would bring their own milk! They said they didn't like that "cows milk" but wanted "real milk" from the store

I think MaryM has a story about "where eggs come from" (and she's the biologist of the group! ) ....
but I think this is one place where us home-educators can really educate our kids ... they know that food doesn't just "appear" in the fridge -- they've been grocery shopping with mom ... and they know that clothes don't just "appear" in their closets -- they've been thrit-storing or cheap-storing with mom (or occasionally sewing with mom  ) ... and they know that housecleaning is a weekly event that the WHOLE family participates in !
