Hi. My name is Robina. My children are very young, but I am feeling called in someway to homeschool. I'm just in the initial stages of researching this and have so many doubts and questions. My oldest is only 2 so I know I have lots of time to decide, but I would like to start doing some preschool stuff at home. Can you recommend a good prgram. If I do this I would like to do a combination of set curricula and independent stuff I think, but at least in the beginning I think I need some guidance. Any tips or help would be great. My big concerns are scheduling and socialization (this is mostly for my oldest since he only has one sibling for now hopefully). I think there are some failies that homeschool in my church that I plan on trying to contact, but is there anyone on this listserv who lives in the Charlotte, NC area? I'll try to post a picture of my family. Thanks.

Hi Robina,
My sister lives in Charlotte and and her oldest is also almost 2. She is planning to homeschool, as well - I've pm'd you!

Welcome, Robina! I think for someone as young as your oldest, just reading to her would be fine. She'll pick up so much if you read quality picture books to her.

Hey -- we're not far from Charlotte. You might like to subscribe to the CarolinaCatholic homeschooling yahoo list, which includes folks from all over, and has recently had a lot of Charlotte-area discussion. I don't have the link handy right this second, but I'll pull it up for you asap.

Here's the link for that Carolina Catholic yahoo list, Robina.
And I second what KC said: lots of reading aloud and daily living is enough "program" for a 2-year-old. The best foundation you can lay is a joyful, loving relationship and a sense of wonder about all the mysteries of God and His creation. Everything else grows out of that.

Welcome!
We've had many discussions here about scheduling which I think you'll find helpful.
And you might want to look into this brand new book regarding socialization: Haystack Full of Needles.

The classic newbie mistake is to want to do too much. At age two, your little one doesn't need much. Reading to your child as much as possible is the most important academic thing you can do at this time. Also, follow his lead. For instance, if he starts taking an interest in colors, then find books, tapes, puzzles, games, etc that focus on colors. Feed his hungers.
Another book about socialization that is really popular is "Hold onto your Kids". I reviewed it recently on my blog, and the book may lessen some of your worries on that front. Don't feel pressured to enroll them in tons of activities or playdates with any other expectation than for them to have fun or get exercise. The more interaction children have with other children may actually decrease their social skills.
You've come to the right place to flesh out and ask questions. Read everything on homeschooling you can, so that you and your husband can figure out what goals and methods fit your family. I've been where you're at and it is easy to become overwhelmed, impatient, and tempted to try too much too soon.
Welcome to the club!!

Welcome aboard! I'm the listowner for the CarolinaCatholicHSers list and I just approved your membership.
We do have quite a few folks out that way so hopefully they'll reply. Our family uses mostly Mother of Divine Grace School for our curriculum but we adjust it as need be.
I'll reply more to you on the other list when I can.
:-)
