and only three out of five cried, one being me!
We don't have all the books we need this year, the computer would not play the MUS dvd, and possesive nouns were just too hard. Golly, summer was fun.....
I am beyond overwhelmed this year, with two delayed readers, one oppositional reader (meaning, he does not want to do it, but can), and one beginning reader.
Everything hinges on reading, yet we sooo cannot read on our own around here. I feel like a failure today.
OK-whine is over. Going to make lunch and try to redeem the afternoon with fun science.

I do know what you mean with delayed readers. My first three had no problems, in fact the third one basically taught himself when he was very young. And then I have the second three! It is hard to do all of the fun things when you are just trying to catch the delayed ones up to where they should be. And like you said, everything hinges on reading. It is so much easier when you can have living books sitting out and know that the children will pick them up. It is so much more difficult when you have to read all of the science, the history, and even the math. But it is my experience that they do eventually get it. My oldest delayed reader in now 12 and in 7th grade. He is a marathon reader who reads anything and everything. Now as for spelling.....that is another matter!

Well, you did better than I did yesterday. I am pretty sure we all cried. That would be nine for nine. (Okay, maybe ds 17 didn't cry, but he did yell and the rest of us cried! )
It will get better as you all settle in to a routine.

Here too...
2 delayed readers, one daydreaming teen that gets distracted if the wind blows, a baby that puts math manipulatives in her mouth, a preschooler that wants my attention, a dear girl who is so good and quiet but I never get enough time with her, a 17yo that needs lots of tutoring for the PSATs...
And they still expect to eat!

Awwww. I'm sorry you had a rough first day. It's not fair, is it? I've had two late readers, after having had two early readers. And it looks like I have another two early readers. Just when I thin kI've got it down... LOL!
Be gentle with yourself. If there is one thing I've learned in my years of homeschooling, it's to take it slowly and build to a more active schedule. Our books aren't all in yet, either and we start Monday. The plan is to make that a celebration day complete with a birthday cake for the Blessed Virgin and First Day treat bags. Then we'll do circle time and read alouds, with perhaps a nature walk on Thursday or Friday - just to get used to the routine again. Nothing taxing on me or on the children. Makes for more smiles and fewer tears.
It's especially important for our family this year with my husband's new business venture, and an increase in my writing outlets. Sanity is of prime importance.
I'll be praying for you!
Blessings,
