Ladies, you have always helped me and I come again for your advice and thoughts.
There is a certain person has been staying in the pew for MONTHS during communion once she found out a convalidation would be necessary (1 Cor 11:27-29). (never was mentioned during RCIA or all the work it took to find the baptismal certificate). Patiently waiting, wanting hubby to want this just as much.
This certain person has had her prayers answered (Praise God!) and her hubby called Father yesterday about a convalidation.
Father has scheduled this convalidation to take place this Monday, September 8, which is also this kinda cute couple's 20th Wedding Anniversary. (Justice of the Peace)
That is right around the corner!
What are your thoughts about opening my home for a brunch on Sunday. I can't cook and have a mess to clean. I thought about inviting Father and five families (my Catholic homeschool group friends). The pressure is on, especially if Father comes, but I don't want it to be like that.
Would you have a brunch?
I couldn't afford to pay for a lunch at a restaurant for everyone.
Just offer coffee, tea, cake, and cookies?
Grill some hot dogs?
Skip the extra stress since I'm down to five days.
Gift etiquette? Father has graciously scheduled this Monday, which is an important date...now we won't have to celebrate two days, but one big day...and he's leaving early the next morning out of town...I hope this is ok to ask...do we give him something? It's not a wedding, hopefully it will be painless and quick. I don't want to insult Father by giving him something in a thank you card, but we are so thankful!
Any advice or thoughts?
I really don't mind if you say don't do anything extra on Sunday. lol

I am so happy for you!!!!
If you want to go the brunch route, go easy. You can get quiches from the grocery store and do lunch meats (if possible). Drinks, cookies, chips and you're done.

Ditto what KC said.
And I think it would be okay to give a stipend to Father in a thank you card.

At the one convalidation I attended, the happy couple had us to their home for champagne, coffee and cake. Can't remember if it was the same day or not.
Maybe you could just ask if you could bring a cake to church?

I was thinking the same thing as Nancy only if you want it to feel more "brunch-ish" instead of "reception-ish" serve coffee, coffee cakes and champagne punch (good way to stretch the champagne). If you are going to invite the other families, ask them to each bring a coffee cake instead of any gifts.

Congratulations! I think coffee and cookies or muffins if fine--just don't call it brunch. But if you can swing some quiches at the store that would be lovely with champagne and a bowl of fruit. That's what we did for one our baptisms and it was perfect. I bet the other families will offer to bring something, too. I'm a big fan of celebrating so I encourage you to find the most low-stress way to do it up!

Wow, so happy for you!!! Congratulations!
In case you're looking for something a bit different, how about a strata like this? You don't have to use prosciutto or goat cheese. I'd use whatever cheese is on hand, some stale French bread from the store, ham from the deli, whatever other veggies you want to put in there like spinach or peppers... it's simple and do-ahead but looks like it took a lot of work :)
