My daughter has a new passion for paper dolls. She is 6 and a perfectionist so I usually have to help her cut them out but that's okay. It's something we can do together. I've found a great way to organize them that I thought I would share in case anyone else has a child with this interest. I was tired of picking them up off her bedroom floor or finding them crumpled in a plastic bag or shoe box somewhere. So, I found a 3 inch binder and used gallon size zip-lock bags. I used a 3-hole punch to put holes in each bag and put them into the binder. She puts each set of paper dolls into a different zip-lock. When she wants to play with a certain set, she just removes that zip-lock bag from the binder. She has done a great job so far in putting them back into the binder when she is done. She takes it everywhere to show her friends. To add to the fun, I'm going to get her some pieces of white cardboard that will just fit into the bags. She can make a decorated label on them for each set of paper dolls. The cardboard will not only act as a label, but will also help keep the bags stiff so they don't flop around so much. Just thought I'd share an idea!

Dear BEcky,
What a great idea! I have several past issues of Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion and there are always paper dolls in there. My three-year-old will be delighted to have a notebook with these. I can hardly wait to do this  !

Elizabeth, my mom cut out all the paperdolls from her past ME issues and laminated them for my dd. She loves them still! ME also sells a magnetic fold up doll house. You could even put magnetic paper on the back of the dolls so they could stand in the house. I put a velcro dot on each one after laminating them so that their clothes just stick on.

Great idea! My girls have been playing with the dolls I printed from HERE but they are getting easily ruined. I wonder what else I can put away using this system? Hmmmm...

Becky, this is a super idea!! How about doing a stage that fits into those panoramic scrapbooking page protectors with little velcro sticky dots on them, then she'll have performances to go as well! My daughter has quite a few Kirsten AG paper dolls (I know gasp!, but they're several years old) she has managed to preserve hers pretty well, but I LOVE the idea of laminating and the storage idea, so nice and tidy, and something for them to really keep together! BRAVO!

I read a book today that would be perfect to go with paper dolls -- The Paper Princess and The Paper Princess Finds Her Way both by Elisa Kleven. These are a delight and encourage making your own paper dolls.....
Also, another we read today, which would make great ideas for making your own paper doll clothes is: Kitty Princess and the Newspaper Dress.
I love finding books that fit with what the kids are playing with!

My girls love these St. Therese paper dolls. We also have Kateri Tekawitha and Dover puts out tons of paper dolls books at very reasonable prices.

I am enjoying this thread. I loved paper dolls as a kid but my daughter has only had phases of interest. She never got into it that much. So now that my interest was raised again, I surfed a bit and found this article on the history of paperdolls. It's very interesting - especially the history of the magazine paper dolls (like the Betsy McCall doll of the earlier link). I found this Betsy McCall website which has the scanned pages from the original McCall's magazines where she was featured. I don't personally remember these dolls from the magazine but the 60's clothing does bring back memories - it's like looking at our family albums. It sure is nostalgic. Take a peek - it's lots of fun. Some of the scans are good enough that you could print them and use the paper dolls.

I love the ziplock idea, Becky. I do something similar, an idea I got from a homeschooling friend here. We keep them in page protectors in 3-ring binders. So much better than the shoebox solution I used to use!

Well tonight my 9 year old wanted to look through the box in the basement with some of my "old stuff" from grandma's house. It's been awhile since we went through it. Well it had all my old paper doll sets. I had forgotten how many I had (and my mom carefully saved them all). They are all late 60's/early 70's sets. Anyone want to take a walk down memory lane with me? These are the sets:

Josie and the Pussycats
Chrissy and Velvet
Rock Flowers
Liddle Kiddles
Beth Ann baby paper doll
Mary Poppins
The Happiest Millionaire

Boy! Do those bring back memories! I never played much with the dolls, but the comics and cartoons we watched are all represented (no Scooby Doo paper dolls?)

I just found this thread for the first time. (How is it that I can always check active topics when I get on the board, and still miss interesting things for days and days?!) I spent a frustrating half hour or so a few days ago looking for paper dolls on the web. And to think that all these great links were just sitting here waiting for me . . .
My girls have spent the past two days making their own paper dolls and clothes. They are doing a great job too.
I love the three ring binder idea and can't wait to try it. Thanks!

Just another suggestion on the line of paper dolls. When my dd was two, (too young to play with paper dolls without tearing them) her grandmother gave her a "fabric paper doll" that she had bought at a craft show. This was a doll cut from cardboard. The face and hair were painted on and she was wearing a slip. The slip was actually fabric that was attached, I assume, by some sort of glue. The dresses were all cut from fabric and then stiffened with something. (I don't sew, so I have no idea what they might have used for this...perhaps some of you that sew could help here.) Anyway, each of the dresses, cut from fabric, just had two slits under the shoulders of the dress. To put the dress on, dd would just slide the arms of the doll through it. She loved this little doll! I'm thinking of making some for my niece this year for Christmas.

Thanks for this link. The dolls there are perfect!!! I wish there were lots more like that on the web. We printed out a doll and some outfits for each of my girls on cardstock. I used sticky laminating sheets to further protect the dolls. What a great find.
