Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just wondered if any of you were joiningthis.

I'd love to but they still have the offending anti-Catholic blog linked on their front page.

It sounds fun! Maybe we could do our own class and assignments.

Elena,
I have a post waiting "in the wings" regarding this topic but haven't dotted all the "i's" yet.

I'd love it if there were an alternative.

The antiCatholic site is really ramping up lately with lots of new links and "info".

But isn't it sometimes better to "fight" with charity, openness and playing in the same schoolyard to show that no, Catholics don't have two heads, don't dance with the devil, etc. Misperceptions, prejudice and bias always seem to go away when people can put faces/names to the "other".

Not to say, I'd join in on this blog, but I just hate the "I'm going to take my ball and go home" attitude which does such a disservice to those who don't understand, and need to.

Just my $.02.

Mary, I go to her site and post calm comments just stating a different point of view - and also try to leave "wow, your home is so clean and neat" or "thanks for the recipe" comments too, and get blocked. It's hard to know how to reach her - or the many gullible women who believe her every word.

My main issue is with the Blog Awards Site itself. Despite many people requesting that they NOT link to this anti-Catholic site on the front page, they have done so anyway because she won one of their awards.

It's a shame because the Homeschool Blog Awards Site has a lot to offer but I don't know if in good conscience I can participate in any of their things when they were so firm in allowing the link to this anti-Catholic site to remain.

That is my problem with it. Although I agree with the way you are thinking about it Mary - and to show charity - the problem comes in that the people who go to *her* site don't even look and see Catholics being charitable anywhere.   Even when Elena has just responded on her blog with the actual truth of the doctrines that Candy is twisting, Elena gets blasted by people saying she is being mean, has a hate blog, etc. Candy doesn't let Catholics (or anyone) comment anything she doesn't like, she lies, she spreads lies, she has said outrageously offensive and vulgar things about Catholics - and is still linked on HSBA as a "Family Friendly" Award Winning Site - considered the "BEST of the Homeschooling Blogs". Other blogs were knocked out because of cussing - that wasn't "family friendly" - but somehow calling our Church the "W*ore of Babylon" and that we are also "worshipping Dagon the Fish God", and are on our way to you know where simply because we are Catholic, is "family friendly"?   The HSBA are just too hypocritical for me.

sorry. stepping off soapbox....

Good for you for trying!

I'm saying that sometimes when people are so set in their ways (this NEVER happens to me or mine, of course ) sometimes they need to be shown ... through our words, thoughts and actions ... that we're good people too! Evangelization works real well when we put out there not just what we believe, but what we do. We don't place BVM above God, we don't drink blood, we don't have 2 heads ... as can be seen in our everyday blog posts.

And Elena, I don't think the Homeschool Blog Awards site should have to remove an "award winner" -- that's one of the "prizes" of winning. I'm sure there are things in some of the Catholic blogs that would offend other Christians as there are new agers and others who would be offended. Once you start doing a public "home school" think and go outside the Catholic blog ghetto, you're going to run into this.

Again, just my $.02

certainly not they way they're thinking we do ... it's so hard. I lived for 3 years in Greenville, literally down the road from Bob Jones University! WOW!

We took a group of Catholic middleschoolers to their Sacred Arts museum -- full of Catholic art and my poor dh had to keep correcting the curator (!) as he didn't understand the symbolism of why Catherine of Siena was dressed as a bride, etc.

I'm sorry Mary - I understand the difference. I guess I was just trying to lighten the mood or something. I've never lived in the south but have done my share of apologetics. Whoo wee! ITA on the "Wow" of how, ummmm, mind boggling some of the misunderstandings are.

I don't think new agers are able to participate. I know some of the secular homeschool blogs weren't. HBA claim to be a family site. I think the posts, particularly about the Whore of Babylon were anything but family friendly. They shouldn't be able to have it both ways.

Fwiw, I'm with Mary. I think the best strategy is to stay off that woman's blog, not even mention it to the Blog awards site and then work on having the *best* blogs around and work toward winning. Having been protestant, I think the best way to reach protestants is not by explaining why we aren't cannibals or other nonsense, but by loving, by being kind, by finding common ground. They learn we don't have two heads when we *do* kindness, but rarely by our words. This is what Jesus did. And we are instructed in the NT to "give a reason for the hope we have within us"...but that presupposes being asked, first, I think.

I think this is one of those times where Francis of Assisi's words work best:

At all times preach the gospel. When necessary, use words.

There are several posts there that are definitely NOT family friendly.

'The Marriage Bed Undefiled' wasn't... used some quite graphic words.

Even today's post on the site uses a word I would consider "not family friendly".

It is more than just "not agreeing". It is more than just "being offended because they are not Catholic".

It's really about the HSBA not following their own rules, or at least, applying them inconsistently.

I think, also, each of us has our own gifts. Some are called to pray silently, some are called to activism. All things should work together for the greater glory of God.

Unfortunately in a blogging, cyber/media all we really have are words - written words at that.

There is a place for admonishing the sinner and instructing the ignorant. Those are parts of the works of mercy. On my apologetics blog, we do work to correct the misinformation.

But my original question I suppose was how many 4Real gals would be joining this HBA activity. Just by looking at their site I'm not seeing any of the moms from here there so I'm going to guess few to none.

I am still trying to decide what i want to do. I do like the idea of doing our own. I don't have the time to administrate it.

Thanks for your input ladies.

Ooops one more thing. Cactus mouse mentioned the secular blogs that weren't included because of cussing.   I checked some of those out and even started following a few of them and while the language and some of the topics aren't family friendly, there really is some good information and writing on those blogs. It's more offensive to me that they were left out while the anti-Catholic propoganda blog was allowed to participate, win and get a spot on the side bar.

Oh Elena.

I have lots of sympathy. I gave up trying to convince a bunch of fellow Filipino bloggers -- ex-Catholics/cafeteria Catholics -- I just wasn't getting anywhere and my comments were always pounced on and twisted. A lot of hatred there for the Pope, for the Church, for homeschoolers (which they see as religious fanatics) etc. These days I still blog about issues that bother me when I stumble upon some of their posts/comboxes, but I just pour out the thoughts on my own blog and not even comment on theirs anymore. I hate that the Phils. is known as a predominantly Catholic country and yet so many are leaving the faith and turning to agnosticism and atheism. So many are leaving the faith without even asking questions and just accepting whatever junk they get from the media or books like Da Vinci Code, but there's really only so much I/we can do.

At some point we all just have to trust in God's grace... I'd say just keep posting all that good stuff in your blog. I'm sure you're reaching people, it may not be so apparent right now, and maybe not the people you want to target specifically, but you ARE reaching people.

Sometimes direct confrontation works, and sometimes it doesn't. I know some of the readers of the Filipino agnostic/atheist blogs I was trying to combat in the past are now visiting my blog on a regular basis, so even if they don't comment or agree with me most of the time, I know at least they're reading, and hopefully thinking.

I have never really looked at the HSBA site before so I haven't followed the debate about the blog in question. The particular activity sounded like a lot of fun to me but, likewise, I can't administer it. I would probably participate but won't over there because I think I have all the online community I can handle!
