Looking over Grandma's Thread I noticed all the old-fashion names that have made strong comebacks in the last couple of decades.
I would say Emily is probably the #1 name.
I have three god-daughters named Rebecca, Rachel and Abigail...very popular names today.
I think Sarah is another one.
At the dance studio a few years ago a mother heard me call Annie by name and she said "That's an oldie. You don't hear that name hardly."
Turned out her name was Annie...named after her grandmother. But the name Ann has never fallen out of use...at least as a middle name.
Any other comeback names?

Emma seems to be very popular now.
I hear a lot more Isabelles lately, too.
We are using Beatrice if we have a girl. While not wildly popular, it seems moreso than when I was younger.
Also, Henry. People are always commenting about not hearing that one much, but I know there are quite a few little Henrys I've heard of recently including some on this board.

Isn't it funny how you think you have come up with an original "old" name only to start hearing it everywhere?
We have an Emily. If Seth had been a girl I wanted Anna or Sophia. Seems like there are Sophias everywhere now. I never met anyone named Sophia before a friend used the name five years ago!
My nieces are Dorothy, Camille, Isabelle, Alexandra (x2!) and Madeline. Not names we heard much 15 years ago.

Henry - yes, definetly. We have a very dear story about the name Henry, it is quite sentimental to my husband. Also Mary. Someone commented to me once that it was a very 'classic' name you hardly hear anymore. (not in OUR circles I suppose, but overall...)

William and Jack are more popular these days, too. (I think Jack is the new Tyler.)

Also Olivia and Hannah. My daughter was in a little preschool a few years back and the teacher would say to the class - the Emmas on one side, the rest of the class over here! There were six Emmas in the little class.
Wouldn't it be great if Mary made a comeback!!

Our 4yo dd is Dorothy!
It's a family name on dh's side. Her middle name is Johanna....so most of the time we call her Dorothy Jo.
Not many 4 yo Dorothys out there , although we did meet a little 7 yo a couple years ago.
From 1908-1939, it was always in the top-10.
Throughout the 1920's, it was the second-most popular name! . Anyone want to guess what was the first??
Louisa (Louise), another "oldie" is my all-time favorite girl name, but dh doesn't like it . 1908-1920 it was in the top-20.

I had been wondering why Dorothy hadn't made a comeback with the names that are popular nowadays. I don't think we will use it for two reasons: to me,a native of NYC, it is Dahr-othy, but where this child will be living, it is Dore-othy. And two, when I was really nauseated earlier this pregnancy, we had some Wiggles videos out of the library for the kids, and I am reminded of that nauseated feeling when I think of Wiggles songs... including the one about Dorothy the Dinosaur.
Have considered Louisa a little bit after my late father, Lewis.

Our kids all have old fashioned names:
Catherine Elizabeth (Therese also now w/ confirmation)
Andrew John (whose nickname is Jack after my grandfather)
Caroline Grace
William Henri
Sophie Mireille
Louis Charles
We have a long list of possible names for the new babe. All of them are either old French or old English names. Dorothy was one of my grandma's names. I also love Dorothea. Lovely!
Blessings,

And Lenore Esther. Lenore -After Poe's The Raven, and Esther after my MIL who died just over a year before Lenore was born... very old fashioned

Dorothy is definitely a comeback name and rightfully so! We also know a cute little Beatrice called Bebe.
I thought my girls' names were old fashioned, but then more kids with the same names started popping up.
Blaise seems to be gaining in popularity in Catholic circles and we have met a few Zane's but I don't know how popular that name used to be so I don't know if it is a come back. Although, we have also heard about some Blaze's which I think is more common outside of Catholic circles.
I love Ivy, Elizabeth. Lily and Rose aren't terribly uncommon, but Ivy is definitely a blast from the past. Fun threads. Who doesn't love talking names!!!

That's a beautiful old-fashioned name. I always envied girls with "regular" or "real" names. It was hard having a really unusual name.
A few years ago, there was a discussion on the MO email list and somehow the subject of my name came up. Bridget asked if my parents named me after Gregory of Nyssa. Since neither of my parents are Catholic, the answer was 'no'. However, I like that I can say I have a Saint's name now (thank you Bridget!).
I do have an old-fashioned middle name, however. It's Fay. Mum wanted to call me Faith (which I love), along with a host of more traditional names. Nissa is the one that came out of the hat - literally.
I've grown to like it. In combination of my names means an emblem or beginning of faith, or a woman of faith, depending upon whether you use the Hebrew for my first name, or the Arabic. LOVE that.
But I digress...
I'm totally enjoying this thread - lots of good names for the baby list!
Blessings,

Grace has made a big comeback...or, rather, Gracie.
We have a Gracie Olivia in the family vine.

When Garrett began playing basketball I heard Zane for the first time. The name has grown on me.
Something I keep in my heart is the thought of having twins named either:
Blaise and Bridget
Zane and Zelie

Oh, goodness, I hear you, Nissa.
Very hard.
Like you I've grown to like my name. Tolerate it maybe?
I love the saint connection Bridget pointed you to. How cool.

Nissa is Scandinavian for "friendly elf" and Greek for "the beginning". In Dictionary of Patron Saints, it also says that Nissa can be connected with St. Nisia who embraced martyrdom in ancient Africa. Her feast date is June 28th. I guess I always thought it was a nickname for something else like Vanessa maybe.
