Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

It is so long since I watched this. Is it a PG or an R - what age would you recommend it as appropriate for?

definitely not R. It might get a little intense for sensitive younger kids. Typically, they get bored before they get disturbed. I have and would let all of mine watch it. It's been a while. Maybe I'll put it on the Netflix queue.

Thanks Molly - I am just writing my American History plan for the year - slotting in movies - I thought this would be perfect for Civil War - I just cannot remember how old I was when I watched it (loved it)

I noticed that Gettysburg the movie gets a G rating. I have not watched this.

I agree with PG for Gone with the Wind, but definitely would not give Gettysburg a G. Gettysburg is extremely realistic, violent, and gut-wrenchingly emotional at times. I absolutely LOVED the movie, but it is one of those that really stays with you, if you know what I mean. I would never show it to a child under age 13 or so.

Thanks Theresa - I shall scrub Gettysburg off the list.
All mine are 11 and under

Have you watched Gods and Generals - do you have an opinion?

Gods and Generals is wonderful. But not for the under 10 crowd. It's war. It's grim and noble and uplifting and sad. It strives to give an accurate and sympathetic presentation of both sides. It's one of our favorites for after the under 10's are in bed.

GWTW is a grand civil war movie, though very lopsided.
Also the marriage relationship between Rhett and Scarlet is difficult and rather ugly. Even my olders have not seen it for that reason.

Gone With the Wind discusses issues of marital infidelity, prostitution, and marital abstinence in a very veiled way. Might go over their heads or it might prompt a discussion.

I also agree that Scarlett and Rhett are not what I would call admirable characters.

And there are also a couple of disturbing scenes like when they cut the soldier's leg off, or when Scarlett shoots the Union guy in the face. Oh, and the father being nuts and two deaths from horse-jumping accidents.

I love to watch this movie, but I think it's more for the over 13 crowd, but of course my opinion is suspect as I've been pegged a fuddy-duddy...it's also very long.

This movie always seemed to me less about the Civil War and more about the character's relationships. It's also very much from the South's perspective. I wish I had an idea for an alternative, but as my oldest is 8 we haven't really started much history yet.

I also really enjoyed reading the book.....

We watched Gone With the Wind as a family with friends. The references mentioned above went over the heads of my younger ones. It's long, so lots of kids wouldn't have the patience for it.

Marilyn

I remember reading the book when I was 16, I was soo engrossed I read it all through my recess and lunch for two whole days and at night when I should have been studying. I loved it! The weirdest thing was that I hated both Scarlett and Rhett, they were the two most selfish people I had ever 'met'. But the book was gripping. If the movie is anything like the book it certainly wouldn't be for the under 11s but then I'm a fuddy-duddy too
