This evening at dinner, my oldest dd was saying that she'd like to purchase some more country music for her iPod. The conversation continued about music when dd, who is 13 years old, said something jokingly about me listening to RECORDS back when I was young. When I agreed, it became obvious that she had been teasing . . . and honestly didn't think that I had listened to records when I was a child. Her sisters agreed. Evidently, they all thought that records were something of the distant past, things that were not made since the 1950s or so.  When they learned that, indeed, dh and I both owned and listened to many records in our childhood and teen years, they were shocked at how old their parents are! 
That led to a google search of the history of vinyl records and this interesting YouTube piece. Did you know that vinyl records are making a bit of a comeback in some circles?
Who knew that my childhood could be the source of a dinner table history lesson?

We love our records here too! I have a small collection and it is so cute to see my children listening to and dancing to records. I just love the old "staticy" sound they make, it's almost like reaching back all those years into the time period they were made.
My guys love the old Frank Sinatra, musicals, Shirley Temple, John Denver, loads of classical music,lots of stories on record and best of all Albert Finney's "Scrooge" for Christmas. Love, love, love my records!
We have an old fashion-looking record player with a CD player, tape player, and radio. My brother gave it to me for Christmas last year so I could listen to my records again, they were on sale at Target I think.

That's funny, Irene. Do you remember that Fisher Price wind up record player (that was actually a music box) but had "records"? My sister's boys call them cds instead of records -- which they are the right size, but....
I'm a throwback, because I never stopped listening to records. My little guy was even browsing through the record bin at our library on Monday. I still buy used records. Even though some old records have been restored on CD, the cd covers don't have all the information. And there's just something about the record -- "Turn it over, please, Mommy!"
I use cds and records, but I have to admit cassettes are a bit more an oddity in this house. My son is puzzled by those.

We have about 18,000 (yes, 18,000)records in our garage right now Since dh sells them on ebay, we're certainly hoping that the comeback does comeback and stays!

We have all the formats--albums, cassettes, cds, and yes, I *do* remember 8-track tapes! Our records are in two boxes, but we do not have a turntable. We do want our children to experience the sound of an album. I love my cds and they are so easy, but there is something about the sound of a record ...

Yes, I do. We even hear it on the radio over here, but I think it is the version by Elton John and Kiki Dee. Drives my children nuts when I *sing* along!

Yep! I remember both. And we had an 8 track tape player at one time too. I heard "Love Will Keep Us Together" for the first time in many years just the other day at a swim meet. I love hearing oldies like that out of the blue and finding out that I still remember all the words after so long. Too bad my current memory doesn't work like that!

Hand is raised!! 8 tracks were so funky!
As we are packing today, I heard Carole King's Tapestry album. Dh was playing it. It was the first CD I ever purchased (and this was weeellll after the year 2000) and what did I buy? A 30 year old album! But I remember when she won 3 grammys for that one.
Next up was Michael Jackson

I am in the same boat as you, Irene. I can remember the words to songs that I learned ... well, years ago, but not what I had for breakfast this morning!

I remember Tapestry as well.
But what I do remember best is this- having a brother who was a total vinyl collector, 8 years older than me. I was never allowed to touch his records. Well, he moved out to BC and I started having a look. Even took a few to University with me. Fast forward almost 20 years and my brother is moving to Paris. I told him we could store some of his stuff if he posted it. What do you think he said? He told me that maybe he would but he definately wasn't sending any records. He brought up Bob Dylan's Self Portrait etc.- HE WAS STILL BITTER I cracked up at that....his records are still his babies!
