Last night, Steve and I were able to attend an advanced screening of the movie, Fireproof.
It was made by the same folks who made Facing the Giants.
This movie was incredible. You can watch the trailer, here.

Oh, I am glad to hear your review. I tend to avoid anything with him in it. After doing the Left Behind movies, and seeing him on evangelical religious television spots telling me to say "the sinner's prayer" - I just would steer clear from things he was attached to....
But it is good to hear from a trusted source that it isn't objectionable! Thanks!

PLEASE take the time to go see this amazing movie. my dh was able to screen this as well last spring, and we attended as a date night with lots of other couples on opening night, this past Friday.
Three showtimes were sold out! and they added another showtime.
Well worth the time and money. I also would be open to my 12 and 15 y/o seeing it.
If you go to the website I listed above, they have a special resource section for Catholics!

Lisa, Thanks for mentioning it has a 'section' for Catholics. I too am very skeptical about this movie, for the reasons Laura mentioned. While I understand to support movies from Hollywood that have a Christian marriage, I am a bit confused over the Catholic 'hubbub' over this movie since, well, we have so many great, theologically sound resources on Catholic marriage, kwim? I will be sure to check out the link you mentioned.

The one issue many of us Christians can agree on is the need for marriage to be between one man, and one woman, for life- a covenant. This is what the movie's main intent was. If any of you saw "Facing the Giants"- this was in no way like that movie. (while it was a nice effort, the focus was on a "prosperity gospel" type message- quite evangelical in tone)
The writers/producers made a HUGE effort with this movie- reaching out and asking for help from the Catholic Church leaders- Bishops and laity- as to how to connect with and provide accurate teaching and resources.
While no movie is perfect- this deserves our support and a big two thumbs up for what they are trying to achieve. (and a thank you from us Catholics - oh how I wish that the Catholic community could come together to create something like this!!)
Also to be commended is how they address p*rn in the movie- which affects a full 1/2 of all households- Christian,Catholic, homeschooling or not...
Of special appeal to me is that they used all "real career" people (non actors) in the movie except for Kirk C. So the firefighters were all real firefighters, the nurses all real nurses, etc.
as the daughter of a firefighter, I could relate to the jokes, etc at the station!!
PS- I am not a big Kirk C fan either - but there seems to be a bit more spiritual maturity in this movie, kwim? and I have to admit, I'd rather support a protestant actor who will not kiss any actor other than his wife!! compared to the normal, even PG actors out there....

I seriously agree!!!
I know that I will not be seeing this movie myself, but maybe now I can feel more at ease when it is discussed in Catholic circles. (my money doesn't go to any movie, as we are not movie goers!) I did click around the Catholic tab on the movie site, and well, I'm still not terribly impressed...

we paid for Bella in the theatre on opening night, and we paid for Fireproof on opening night. I think the movie before that was Passion on opening night.
I like to support a movie that is promoting my values,
(which is why I am THRILLED that it was ranked number 3 in the box office for opening weekend, it certainly gave many movie critics pause and something to ponder!! )
other than that we rent at the library for free, or occasionally join netflix for a month or two at a time, 8.99 a month! so I hear you!!

Lisa, Bella and The Passion are both movies where the Catholic community came together to create! :)

My husband and I saw this movie Saturday night with two other couples. I was surprised at how "Catholic" the message was. It was all about sacrificial love and marriage. This was really timely for us since we have just started teaching a new pre-cana class this week. We have been working with engaged couples in Pre-Cana for over thirteen years and one observstion I have made is that many of them have no idea that love in marriage can, will, and should mean sacrifice; in the same way Jesus sacrificed for us, husbands and wives sacrifice for each other out of love every single day. Fireproof brought that message out oud and clear in a modern and entertaining way. I plan on recommending it to our engaged couples because there are many issues covered (particularly internet addiction) which would make great topics of conversation.

yes, we were so impressed. Dh also reminded me that both Mel Gibson and the Catholic Producers of "Bella" are urging everyone to support this film.
Who knows, maybe a colloborative effort might be in the future??

I had heard, right after The Passion fo the Christ came out, that The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal wrote to Mel Gibson asking him to do The Life of St. Francis. I bet that would be awesome!
No word what Mel's response was!
