Where do you unload all this stuff when you come in the door? We live in a 100 year old home that is devoid of closets! So I need to find some creative solutions for storage for the shoes and such (6 people x sandals, rubber boots, runners.... you know the story )
Anyone out there with some great ideas??

We just bought from IKEA their Expedit system with cube size storage. We're not a huge family, but the "cubbies" are for our shoes and bags and extra stuff as you come into the door. We've waited way too long for such a simple solution!

we have rows of coat hooks behind the door.. 3levels of double hooks set up 5 4 5 (screw 1 x 4's to the studs, paint the same as the wall then put hooks along the boards).. there's a box under the dining table just in the door for bike helmets and a box under my computer table for shoes.

In the small hallway next to our back door I have a bunch of dfferent hooks set up. A large single hook up high (diaper bag/sling/purse can all fit) a row of four hooks down low...seasonal bag (right now it has sunscreen/swim diapers/beach towels) and kids items there. On the other side of the wall a row of three hooks for sports items/bags (right now tennis rackets and play rehearsal bag). Shoes go in the cubby where laundry baskets are in another room.

I forgot to mention the wall of hooks, too. They work so well.

Hooks and laundry baskets, that's where it's at! Is there any possibility that the shoes could be stored outside on the porch? I forbid any shoes from entering the house at all and I swear it's the secret to my sanity. Everyone here has a double hook with his/her name on it and that's where everything has to go. The kids know, if you run out of room, then you need to purge!

I recommend the shelving thing Jenn mentioned, too. We have a small family still but I nannied for a year in a large, crazy, household and that's what worked for us.

Thank you for all the solutions. We need to put up more hooks. The cubbies look like a good idea as well- my dh is so busy these days but maybe one of my boys will build me some!
We can't keep our shoes outside as we don't have a covered back porch, and on the front they might get snatched!
When you use laundry baskets do you just pile the shoes in? Different baskets for diff. kids?
Thanks,

We use our back door as the everyday entrance, because it's by the driveway. Right next to that door is the door to the bathroom, and on that door (outside the bathroom, actually in the kitchen if the door is closed) I hung one of those shoe-pocket things made for inside a closet door (holds like 12 pair). So shoes go there, when they're not in a big pile on the floor.
Behind the back door when it's open, but accessible when the door is closed, we have a rack with 3 hooks, so my purse, dh's & my keys, and an umbrella hang there. Coats go on hooks in the laundry room, also off the kitchen but a little further in. There were some already when we moved in, and I hung a few more at kid-height when they got old enough to hang up their own coats.
If anything is NOT in these places, we're doomed, because we have all gotten so used to things being right there. When we sometimes use another door, it takes a while to find all the shoes!
