As a self-professed foodie I never thought I'd see this day. I cannot stand the thought, the smell, the taste of food right now. Just dh asking me what I would like to eat sends me to the bathroom.

I need ideas. Have you been here? What did you do to overcome it? What do you keep in your pantry or fridge? I'm afraid of dehydration but every bite and drink is hard work. This morning I took about an hour just to get a whole-grain English muffin down, and stay down. I need help, please

I've had times when I basically need to tell my dh.. just hand me food, don't ask me to think about it beforehand.

Frozen bean and cheese burritos are one of my best friends.. I can toss it in the toaster oven without having to think about it.. and they're sorta salty (easy on the tummy) and have protein which helps sustain.

But if water is making me feel worse.. I switch to gatorade (or the like) because, for me, it's like my electrolytes are so out of wack that I can't drink water.. and using the gatorade sooner and exclusively seems to get me back in balance way faster than trying to avoid the use.

I was real interested.. just recently I saw that Clif Bar is making a pwd electrolyte drink mix for kids called Splashers.. and it's supposed to be way less sugar and no nasty chemicals (I can't tolerate any artificial sweeteners).

Stef - I am sorry. I went through this last year. I could only survive if I had protein for breakfast - some kind of meat. Could not have anything with any kind of strong smell. I kept down homemade chicken soup - and I literally had this for weeks (cannnot face it now!!)

Dh and the kids had to have bland food - we do not usually do prepared food/take out because of food allergies. I would manage to cook - but then had to lie down - dinner was never possible for me.

Now that it is hot - can your family do sandwiches, cold meat etc. Or maybe grill outside so there is no smell in the house.

My only advice is protein, protein, protein - eggs, bacon, sausage, chicken soup - this is all I could ever keep down. Stocks and soups are nutritious if you can make a whole pot and freeze/refrigerate.

Re dehydration - how about ice cold sparkly water - maybe with a twist of lemonade? Ginger Ale? Can you do milkshakes?

Oh, Stef!    I know right where you are.

First, let me just say that it doesn't matter what anyone suggests, if it doesn't sound good to you, it isn't going to stay down. Just how it works. And the tough part is, you really can't make any decision about food right now so you can't really say what you want. A really awful catch 22.

If you're having trouble staying hydrated, don't feel bad about asking for anti-nausea drugs. I've had them all - orally and IV - the best is Zofran, and my last pregnancy I discovered that they had just come out with a dissolve in your mouth Zofran! Tastes awful, but it beats gagging and throwing it up every time you try to swallow it. The dissolvable Zofran (BTW - about $10/pill - not for the faint of heart) allowed me to avoid a central line and I was only hospitalized once with the last pregnancy - which is amazing for my pregnancies. I guess I'm saying, as much as you might want to avoid them, there is a role for drugs to play here if it allows you to hold a bit more down and stay hydrated. Avoid Phenergan and Tigan if you don't have the luxury of sleeping for the next 3 months.

The only food that was as good coming up as it was going down is hot tea. I couldn't tolerate anything more than plain old lipton tea. It was liquid going in and I fought to hold it there.

If you can think of foods that sound remotely appealing, have your dh stop on the way home from work. But, a word of caution...don't buy in bulk. Chances are, even if you can stomach it for the moment you won't be able to for long and I guarantee you won't want to see it again for the next year (especially if it comes back up by way of your sinuses). Salty seems to do better, and of course the advice to get some protein down is good if you can hold it there.

You're in my prayers, Stef!!! This is a really heavy cross. The biggest help for me was to mentally adopt a mother and baby in crisis. I didn't know her, I didn't need to. Every time I was feeling really, really lousy and quite sorry for myself, I tried to re-focus on her and offered up for her. It took the focus off of me when all I wanted to do was be a big fat whiner.

Accept help if you can. I'm sending many prayers your way!

I'm heading into these waters myself again. I have a love/hate relationship with food. I'm STARVING - find something that sounds good, take two bites, or even just a little sniff, and I'm heaving.

I try to do like Jodie suggested - try not think about it - but I can't help it, my mind wanders to food, then, I get so sick.

Prayers for you Stef. It will pass, and it's all worth it in the end!

A few things that work for me right now:

Hot tea with milk and a small bit of organic sugar settles my tummy in the morning and a plain bagel or toast--no whole grains--just white bread is all I can stomach now...

String cheese--a bit here or there--I can eat that sometimes.

I tried a URL=http://www.vitaminwater.com/]Vitamin Water[/URL] yesterday while I sat and waited for my daughter to finish her Irish dance class. It seemed okay and stayed down, too. It does have a lot of sugar, though, so be careful. I avoided sugary drinks up until now but seem to better be able to tolerate them now. VW have electrolytes like Gatorade but no food dyes.

I try and not think about what I'm eating while I'm eating. I seem to be able to stomach a bit of dry, bland cereal for breakfast once in a blue moon or even at other times of the day. Cheerios seem to work well right now!

I made homemade pizzas last night for dinner and I had cheese with a bit of organic hamburger on top for protein. It was the first meal I have had in 8 weeks that I enjoyed and it stayed down! I am a bit hopeful that perhaps this is the turning point for me and I will start to feel better and better--I'm 11 weeks today.

I wanted you to know that I am praying for you and all the expectant moms on the board each and every day. Hang in there you guys--we will survive!

Oh, Stef, praying for you. I have no advice. My pregnancies sound similar to Mackfam/Jennifer's...the only time I am not in the bathroom is when I am sleeping from the Phenergan. Just swallowing my own saliva was enough to start the gag reflex.....many hugs and prayers that you will feel better soon!

Jodie, you are a life saver!!! I had dh stop by Taco Bell on his way home just so I could have a bean burrito to tide me over 'til we can get to Whole Foods or (gulp) I can make myself some.

I can eat and keep down eggs but afraid of cholesterol -- we have heart problems in the family. I've been having one a day the past couple of weeks and starting to get worried that my arteries are going to clog up! Should I even be thinking of this?

Gatorades sound good, but the last time I had one I remember the chemical taste -- is there a specific flavor you would recommend? I'll keep an eye out for Splashers next time we go grocery shopping. Thanks.

I can NOT take any more deli meat. That's what I was trying to do last week -- carb/protein combo -- I can't even look at turkey or ham right now.

And the weirdest thing -- I haven't been keeping cheese in the house because of family members' allergies. Then I told them I HAVE to HAVE cheese because I need it for the baby, etc. And now that it's in the fridge I've touched it once or twice and THAT'S ENOUGH OF THAT. I can't stand it.

Chicken soup sounds good -- I'll make some tomorrow -- or have dd cook for me -- she's been really helpful but I know getting tired of cooking too. LOL. Good training for her though.

I miss fruit SOOO much. I have bags and bags in the freezer thinking I would want to eat them all the time -- but I get so acidic from EVERYTHING that I'm staying away right now.

Thanks for the tip on medication, Jennifer. My thoughts were starting to head that way today as I was throwing up for the nth time. I'll call the dr. tomorrow to ask.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE tea but afraid that my stomach won't be able to handle it -- is caffeine okay? I miss my Earl Grey with cream and sugar.

Cheez-Its and Sprite sounds gooooood Actually, that made me think of CHEETOS.... ooooh...

And as I'm typing this I just remembered Ikea's swedish meatballs.... I can actually say YUM.

Had a good dinner AND kept it down (so far!) -- hubby bought me some Chicken Katsu from the Japanese restaurant. I only had half the serving but I haven't thrown up yet. It must be your prayers!

So I'll stop here and say THANK YOU. My dh had a huge look of relief on his face when I told him I knew what I wanted to eat. I'll worry about tomorrow, tomorrow.

Congratulations... and you have my sympathy on the morning sickness.

Zofran was a gift from Heaven for me.

Otherwise, it was anything warm and "comfort food-y": mashed potatoes, grits. Lots of salt (salt seems to help me). McDonald's french fries (as long as they were piping hot) and Whoppers.

Salt and vinegar chips if nothing warm was available.

Of course, the down-side to all of this is that I'm hypoglycemic, and all of this would send my sugar level into a tailspin, but that's what happens every time I get pregnant. My first trimester is completely out of control.

Once my first trimester is over, I can get back to eating what I normally eat -- lots and lots of vegetables! (but until then, oh help me, nothing green goes down)

the lemonade flavor is the one I tolerate the best.. (I've also gotten the pwd and can make it half strength) COLD is better too.

Oh and you might try the "ice" flavors.. I like the more "tart" ones.. like lemon or orange or lime.. the fruity flavors are harder.

Truly, I don't like gatorade.. and I do NOT like drinking something sweet all the time. But the midwife I had when I was soooo sick.. basically everything bounced.. swallowed, hit my stomach and came back in a few minutes.

She absolutely insisted that it would help.. and I decided that it was worth a try before considering meds.

So, it's really not a "this sounds good" or "I like this" type of solution but something that works for me, though not everyone.. it's a lot of sugar at first (talking to a pharmacist, the sugar actually helps calm the tummy).. but I can usually start moving back to water (with a smidge of salt and lemon to buffer it) after about a week. It doesn't make it go away.. it just brings it to a manageable level. Oh and I can't use anything with artificial sweeteners (on a good day they upset my stomach)

oh and on the eggs.. the egg white contains whatever it is that breaks down cholesterol.. and the yolk the cholesterol.. so really as long as you're eating both you're probably ok.. especially when you consider it's just for a time.

Don't worry about the eggs! Get some organic ones and you won't have to worry about the yolk. Think of it as DHA. Great for your brain and your baby's too! Eggs are good for you and the thought that they are bad is outdated now.

I am certain that protein at breakfast (usually cooked by someone else, while I was FAR away!! ) kept me going pretty strong most days. I'd have 2 eggs scrambled, and sometimes even some turkey sausage or turkey bacon!!!
