Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are heading into a little Virginia heatwave here this weekend (temps hitting 100 and high humidity ) and I am just SO uncomfortable outside!

I was wondering what you all wear in hot humid climates. I find with age (and weight gain), I am wanting to be covered more. So, how do I dress modestly and not be miserable (and in turn miserable to those around me)? Also, I need to be able to easily nurse the baby discreetly.

Fabric suggestions, styles, specific places to shop?

Thanks!

loose clothing.. it makes the most difference.. a pretty summer dress in a smooth breathable fabric without any spots that bind (no waistbands or tight bodice or such).. oh hmm you mentioned nursing as well.. that's harder.. but a sling or drape can make it possible with a dress with buttons up the front.

For a lot of walking.. I like a pretty tunic style top.. also loose with a pair of capris also not tight but they do have to have a waistband that way my legs don't rub on each other.. it's also very nice for nursing.. a loose top that you just tuck baby under or can pull up and it drapes around baby makes it easier to find rather than looking for a nursing top in particular.

I find cotton skirts, with plenty of pleating (loose, but better by far than gathers), to be just the ticket. That, with a non-binding waist band, an a simple solid color shirt in a cotton, seems to work best for me...

my bathing suit. lol

when it is too hot I wear just above the knee knit skirts or shorts, and Ts. that is if I need to go out in public.
if not going out anywhere then it is the suit, and either hit the pool or play in the hose with the kids.

oh a couple other things I'll do.. stick my feet in the kids wading pool (possible with either a skirt or capris)

or I'll sneak a cool shower usually after we hit peak heat so the temps are on the way back down at least.. nothing major.. takes a few minutes.. get fresh underthings (and outerclothes if needed) hop in the cool shower.. rinse off and hop back out.. the point isn't to get all washed off.. just cooled off and my hair wet which helps the cooling off.. and then put on fresh clothes and ahhhh.. takes maybe 5 minutes but feels soooo good.

Ditto.

Toss a cotton sundress or cotton skirt and tank on and I'm good to go!

I used to do a lot of cotton sarongs for hanging out at the boat, but seem to have gotten away from them over the last year...

It is all about the cotton. Linen works too but wrinkles something awful and then I feel like a wreck. I'm in love with all the cute little sundresses that are out there this year. I think it's awesome to people watch on Duval St. and to see the majority of females wearing skirts now!!!

Okay, I am thinking here that you two are a bit younger and thinner than I am! My bathing suit is a last resort!

The thing about skirts, I can't stand my legs rubbing together. What about linen capris? Do they end up looking bad?

Ditto the legs rubbing together, yuck . I have some Hanes cotton biker type shorts I wear under my skirts, I figure one extra small layer of clothes isn't going to make a difference to this body that's birthed 8 babies anyway.

You won't catch me in my bathing suit until I work off this baby weight, I'd rather be hot...

I love my sleeveless tops, I know some wouldn't consider them modest but we have no AC in the van or house so we have no relief unless we go to the bank or something.I found four of these at a rummage sale recently These are so comfortable with my jean/khaki skirts.

ETA: I changed the link, I don't have the ribbed tanks.

Uggh...we haven't installed the AC yet, and it is HOT and HUMID! It has been sprinkling rain (liquid sunshine, anyone?) every day the past week. Uggh again! I was meaning to emphasize the cotton over the polyester synthetics, Molly. And I've been banned from the ocean till whatever eye infection I have gives up and goes away so no swimming for me. Wading I'll do though!

Hot and humid in Memphis, too . . . I have some cotton-sheeting capris, very loose-fitting with drawstring waist, which I bought at Target last year. Haven't looked to see what they have this year, but last year I bought three pairs, and I have worn them hard! I'm wearing shorts right now, because we've been washing windows, but that's more and more a rarity, and I don't go out in public in shorts much any more.

I do like linen, even with the wrinkles. I have a linen skirt (also from Target, maybe 2 years ago), and a couple of linen blouses, and I wear them "as is" all summer.

LOL not young or thin! LOL

I am forty. and I am currently at least 50 lbs over weight.
but I don't let that stop me.
I have a couple of cute, modest suits. and I LOVE sarongs! have a bunch. so I throw on a suit, pick out a wrap and call it good. that is for hanging around the house, or pool or beach.

I also like capris, or the cotton skirts...but also hate my legs rubbling together then getting irritated, esp after shaving. so I rub a bit of powder on them and THAT helps to keep me comfy and cool.

I stay in skirts, capris and t shirts and just offer it up. I finally pitched all of my tanks, and shorts...

I do kahaki (tan, beige) capri's and light colored tees. I found some thin striped tees that look a bit dressier and are a bit longer (so no gap when bending over, etc) at either Marshalls or TJ Maxx.
I hate the feeling of legs stuck together, so even though skirts look cool to me, they really aren't.
I am sure it looks like i wear jsut about the same thing every day, but it takes me from daily mass, to soccer games, to everything in between and looks decent...

Clothes-wise,I'm in pregnancy fashion purgatory. I wear mostly dresses or skirts with a cotton top.

I know this is going to sound as though I might be over analyzing my clothes but are tank tops modest? I wouldnt wear them to church ever, but around the house I will. I guess I just need to have a guideline of what I should and shouldn't wear. It gets so hot here during the summer that I wear spaghetti strap tanks and shorts around the house and to sleep, is this ok? Am I being immodest in front of my kids?

I read Colleen Hammonds book Dressing with Dignity and she does a great job telling you how your clothes should fit, but in the summer it is so hot that I throw out any reasoning. . I really struggle with this.
So would it be wise to get rid of my shorts?
I need my tanks because I always wear a shirt over them to nurse my ds.
