Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

- after the dreadful storms and tornados last night.

Well - we just got them back - but looking on the positive side - it was wonderfully quiet in our house and street, we all talked to each other and played games by candlelight and everyone (including dh and myself) was asleep by 9pm. I feel so much less stressed - so I figure I need more sleep, less time on the computer and telephone and more time with my family!

(..though I am very happy to have a/c and my hot cup of tea!)

It's true Marilyn! Although we only lost ours for a little over two hours.

We weren't without power at all, but we were out in a parking lot as the first afternoon storm hit. I wrote about it here. It was wild and my toddler was scared. But we ended up alright. Glad to hear everyone else is ok, too.

Our power was out for six or seven hours. And we hung out in the mostly unfinished basement for several of them. I wish I had been more prepared. Is this a normal/seasonal thing for this area? Do you have an emergency kit? If so, what's in it?

I wish I had known it was a tornado warning! I don't have the weather on at my house, or one of those alarms for bad weather to tell me what's going on, although I did see that it was about to storm. My kids were sleeping soundly when our power went out at about 2PM yesterday. It was not back on until 1PM today!

We have never had this happen before, and my kids thought it was an adventure with the flashlights and candles. They also got to spend some extra time at their cousins house, while mommy napped . The kids did not get the concept of "no electricity" as they went around the house, checking every light switch and appliance they could. Each time, saying "why isn't this light going on?"

Yes, we have an emergency kit. It is more like a pantry, really - canned food, juice, water, manual can opener, all important papers in one accessible (basement) spot, camp stove, matches, TP, flashlights (one is hand-cranked). We need a battery powered weather radio. This time I used my laptop and WTOP online, but if the power had gone out I would have been up a tree (and without phone coverage, as wireless phones die when the console's power is cut.

I blogged about my thoughts on emergency preparedness here.

We have lost electricity quite often this past year. And I love the quiet evenings, reading and sitting with the boys with no outside noise! I have been disappointed when it returned!

For the past two days we had no computer/phone due to a glitch by our phone company who was working on lines in our neighborhood. I enjoyed not having to deal with phone and emails! But when our service was returned this afternoon, we had to deal with so many who weren't aware of our problem (since it wasn't city-wide, but just us and our neighbor,) and who got a little testy that we hadn't called or emailed back right away. Now I have a kind of hankering for those older and simpler days, before internet, voice mail, call-waiting, answering machines, etc.   Um, maybe make that a small hankering. Because I do like to have the ability to keep tabs on my boys!

God Bless,
Stacy in MI
