Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

About 6.9 years ago (and I can be so specific 'cuz it is the little culprits birthday tomorrow) I became unable to eat dairy. at. all.

First, the severe "morning" sickness rendered me unable to eat at all, then my gallbadder blew out bigtime.

After the birth, and then the subsequent removal of said gallbladder, I tried introducing dairy again. No luck.

Even today, the smallest amount of certain kinds can bring on an IBS attack to clobber me for two days.

Now, I don't miss milk at all, and while I DO miss yogurt a bit, the HARD things for me are cheese, and ice cream.

I have yet to find a decent cheese substitute. And the soy and rice "ice creams" are pretty too.

BUT!

Today while at the store, my dh spotted "Safeway Selects Chocolate Sorbet." (Safeway is the same as Vons). Checked the label - NO DAIRY! (and it's fat free too!)

And, I have to tell you, I am sitting here eating it, and it is just decadent. YUM! If I had a choice between this & ice cream, I might actually choose this. yum again!

So - for any of you Moms who, like me, have to avoid dairy, this is good.

oh yes, so many things chocolate can do without dairy! i love that hubby and i can share dark choc without triggering his dairy allergies.

there's another brand of chocolate sorbet we just tried a couple of weeks ago (i can't remember the name now, sorry) but we found it at whole foods and it was gooood. selfish note: hubby and i loved it -- it was dark and rich, but too dark for the kids, so we had it all to ourselves :)

there's also a chocolate ice cream sandwich called cuties from tofutti that i believe is dairyless. it's very good.

and if i can find the chocolate sorbet recipe that i got once (it's thickener is cornstarch) i'll post it here -- but it's one where you can't believe there's no dairy, because of the rich mouthfeel. i think it may have been on cooking light.

I have been dairy free for about 6 weeks because of my baby's allergies. Cheese is the big thing I miss. I do miss ice cream, but only when I take my 3yo to the local dairy for some ice cream. I am *SO* grateful that my all time favorite food, very dark chocolate, is dairy free! I don't know what I would do if I had to give that up

Hmmm. One minor complaint, Laura, about the title of this thread---

Chocolate is *never* "totally irrelevant"!

That was my thought!

There is a product called Dari-Free from vances.com that can be made into a totally yummy (and top 8 allergy free) ice cream.

We also liked Tofutti Cuties and Temptation (?) brand ice cream.

For those craving cheese, nutritional yeast on popcorn or baked potatoes always served me well.

I have fallen in love with Raspberry Sorbet from Cold Stone Creamery. Yum-O I always choose it over all the other yummy looking ice creams there!

I'm so glad you posted something so "totally irrelavent".   I also have to stay away from ice-cream and feel the same way about soy. The almond ice-cream is just too expensive - so sorbet here we come. Also thanks to Stef for the recipe. I think even I can do that. Valerie

This looks delish! I hope this isn't a stupid question, but does this require an ice cream maker?? I really want to make this, but don't have a maker. I looked in the store for chocolate sorbet and didn't have any luck.

Not a stupid question at all, Beth!

Here's what I used to do when I didn't have an ice cream maker -- chill the mixture, stirring every hour or so. Then into the freezer, stirring every half hour or so. It's tedious work but the results, while not exactly as you would expect, is good enough to enjoy. And really, with chocolate, it's a bit hard to NOT enjoy

now what i'm craving for is a dairy-free version of Baked Hot Chocolate.

recipe here, but it calls for butter..... i'm thinking earth balance and maybe soy yogurt, or silken tofu to substitute, but the experiment will have to wait.

it's the most decadent thing. kinda like brownie-ganache-pudding-mousse all rolled into one.
