Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi,

Mary Chris' mailing post got me to thinking...

...does anyone know of a legitimate source to 'adopt a soldier'? My children would like to do this, but when I look online - there seems to be so many websites to do so that I get nervous about them.

Has anyone done this? Can you share any tips, ideas, info, etc? Do they really need families to do this?

Laura,

You might ask any Army people you know about deployed soldiers they know personally. My dd's Girl Scout troop did this one Christmas - we contacted our old Navy base in WV and got names/addresses for 7 sailors, most of whom I knew personally. Then, the troop made holiday care packages for them.

I think what most deployed military folks need is the reassurance that people don't hate them because they've 1)volunteered and 2)been sent to Parts East. They don't pick their duty stations. For many people, receiving cards, letters and Pringles (very popular! don't get smashed in the mail!) tells them in a very tangible way that people care about them.

Anyone looking to adopt a sailor can PM me and I will do what I can to connect them to deployed sailors. (In Iraq and Afghanistan, not on ships in the Gulf)

A friend of mine and her kids support Adopt a Platoon

She is very committed to this project and has good things to say about it.

ETA: Yes, the troops really do appreciate this, and families *are* needed to keep the program going.

We've done AnySoldier.com. It seems to be a great program, and pretty safe for the senders involved.
