My printer is dying - I have had it for nearly 9 years. I do not know what to buy - I am looking for a good deskjet or office jet to print in b/w and color. (I doubt I can stretch to a laser) - I especially want one that does not guzzle ink - I use the printer a lot.

Please would you make a recommendation if can.

Marilyn, we have just re-bought a Cannon printer, they have the new ink technology, using have the amount of ink for printing - the old and new one are great. Here is a link to the   US Cannon I'd ask them specifically about this new ink technology.

The HPs are great prices but the ink .... oy, does it rack up especially as some of the printers don't have generic ink cartridges ... like my F380 all-in-one that scans, copies, and prints color ...

WE have gone through a lot of printers and right now my fave is our HP Officejet 3300 - it's a printer/copier/scanner/fax and has come in SO handy. I like that the colored inks are all separate so if you use, say, a lot of red, you don't have to replace all the colors at once.

yes, ink is expensive for most printers I have found, but Office Max gives you $3 store credit when you return the used containers.

This printer does beautiful photos btw, whether on photo paper or even plain paper.

Thanks Suzanne.

I have been looking at the All in Ones at Costco (they were on sale last month) - for some reason an All in One scares me a little.

Marilyn,
We've been using an hp all in one for a few years now. Not the same one, but our original is still working! (We got a free printer when we bought our last Mac laptop.) The ink is very expensive, but I like that I can buy the bulk pack of hp inks at Costco. Also, I do not know what I did before having a copier!!! So essential to me now!!! That's a great feature of the all in one.

It just won't be the same crisp quality of a laser copier/printer though, just so you know. There's really no way around that. You can buy nicer paper (which I do because I like a smoother paper so that the ink stays put a little better) and that will help some. We print all of our Christmas card pictures on our printer and they come out pretty great.

So, I guess I'd endorse the hp as long as you understand that it'll never look as good as a laser printer and the cartridges are $$$. But...you will LOVE having a copier to use.

Marilyn - have you looked into getting a refurbished laser from Staples?

I got a brother mfc 7420 refurbished (similar to this one). Staples has reviews listed under their products -- that's how I picked mine (which they don't sell anymore).

The one I linked to right now costs $150 (with the rebate). I print ALL THE TIME. I'm pretty sure the printer comes with a cartridge... which lasted me for 6 months. I JUST bought a new one for $62.00 which will last me even longer.

I just love lasers and think they are way more economical than the others. If you like color, then that's a lasers downfall. Color lasers are WAY expensive.

Mine is an all-in-one. I haven't had one malfunction yet other than one paper jam feed that was easily fixed.

Just another opinion.

Thanks everyone. I actually do have a separate fax and copier right now (from when I used to WAH) - but both are on their last legs too - so maybe the all in one makes sense. I did see an All in One in Costco today which was copier/scanner/printer which I almost prefer to the one with a fax. I think we need color. I really dislike getting anything new and having the new user learning curve (probably why I still have clothes from 20 years ago - no kidding!!)

Thank you everyone. My dh just installed my new printer - I am so excited as it seems to be working beautifully. We got the HP C4385 All in One Scanner, Copier and Printer (I did not want a fax) - it was under $100 in Costco - some great features are that it is wireless - and when we get a laptop which we really need to as 5 people sharing one computer during schooltime is getting tough - we can just link the laptop to computer through wireless. Also you can just put in your camera card and print photos off - my dh just printed out one of the blueberry picking photos and the quality is good.

I also picked up paper from Costco - and I am all set to print out and read my Laying down the Rails...can't wait...

One last note - Jen and others - Costco can fill HP cartridges (that is what the guy there told me) - so my old HP cartridge which cost $45 - could have been filled for $14. I will have to try it out.

Marilyn,

I just realized that you asked about my printer in another thread. Sorry I missed it. But you got advice from my expert in this thread and it looks like you found just what you need. Great!
