Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I need to find an outfit for my niece's wedding in June. We quick-stopped at the mall yesterday on the way home from a trip into the city, to check in the dress department of the major department stores. What is it with the babydoll dresses? I can't wear those; I look foolish! The women's styles seem to be made for people much younger, while the little girl styles are suitable for people much older.

A mall trip is at least an hour away. I just don't have the time to spend running from store to store with that length of commute. My SIL is meeting me tomorrow after a doctor appointment, and we're going to try a different mall in an area where there are other shopping possibilities as well.

What is a mature woman who isn't waif thin and who wants to look like a mature woman supposed to wear, and where can I find it?

Did you try J. Jill, Coldwater Creek, or Talbots?

Hmmm...every "body type" is different, but this tall but not waif thin 37 year old has had success at Talbot's, Sears and JCPenney. But I haven't looked for dresses this year... and I'm mostly looking for dressy skirts and tops. I also love suits. (I would love to live in the 40s!)

Neither Coldwater Creek nor Talbots had *any dresses in the store. I would like to avoid Talbots prices if I can.

I forgot about J. Jill. off to search...

I visited Dillards and Macys last night. I ran out of time and didn't make it to Sears and JCPenney.

My SIL is suggesting Dress Barn...

I was going to suggest Dress Barn too. I don't remember exactly what they had for the kind of outfits you'd probably wear to a wedding, but I'm a lot heavier than not-waif-thin and want to wear modest feminine clothing, and I basically bought myself almost an entire new wardrobe there about a year and a half ago for -- I forget -- maybe $350. Five sweaters, maybe four skirts.

Though now that I've seen J. Jill's Web site, I'm looking forward to maybe buying some of their things when I'm out of maternity clothes so I hope you found something there already!

I think I'm going to end up with something like this, that I can dress up or down...

ETA I think this is pretty too, but I'll need something underneath to smooth things out...

I would second JC Penney's, especially for dressier dresses. I love Kohl's, but their dress selection is hit or miss.

Good luck!

Thanks. I'd like to drop a few pounds too, but it's not happening fast enough.

What should I get to smooth the lumps? Any ideas?

They are nice dresses! I love them.

For smoothing, Spanx. Really.

Should I order, or can I find it at Macy's?

(showing how very infrequently I make it to the mall...)

I went into a J. Jill outlet with my mil last Christmas and fell in love with their clothes. I didn't realize until after I'd tried on a bunch of stuff that I was by far the youngest shopper there! Oh, well. Good luck finding a dress. Macy's is great on sales--usually their stuff is even cheaper than the rack/tag says.

I had found mine at Nordstroms. Check Macy's online to see if they carry it.

There are two different sections at Nordstroms. There are the "disposable" in the hosiery, and then the lingerie section there are more "permanent" undergarments. The latter are a bit more expensive, but worth it. I need to get more

Have you tried Chadwick's of Boston? Their prices are excellent and the generally have lots of feminine and modest styles.

My husband has rendered his opinions:

1. April Cornell Music Dress
2. Coldwater Creek Tea Party Dress
3. April Cornell Lotus Dress
4. J. Jill Gossamer Eyelet Dress
5. Coldwater Creek Floral Dress set
6. Chadwick's Flutter Sleeve Dress
7. April Cornell Rosa Dress

I'm knocking #2 out of contention, so maybe I'll order the April Cornell's and see how they fit.

I just remembered not only do I have my niece's wedding, but also a dear friend's daughter's wedding. See how I try to make myself feel better about buying a new dress??

ETA never mind April Cornell, everything's out of stock. Sigh...
