Anyone know how old a baby has to be before he/she is allowed to fly? Thinking ahead here with the overseas assignment next year...

I've brought babies as young as 3 months on board -- I don't think there is a minimum age (but I believe now they charge a percent of a regular ticket for cbabies (even if they'll be on your lap).

I didn't read this post... because I was thinking "I have no idea." But now I'm wondering too: is there something else we should be noticing here!?!?

I do not think that there is an age limitation; however, there can be some sort of parent restriciton (for lack of a better way to put it). Two years ago, my sister and her husband travelled with their two young children to Switzerland. The youngest was a one year old. My sister's husband returned home early. When it came time for my sister to fly home, she was told that she could not do so because the father of her children was not with her. It took a couple of hours and a delayed plane to clarify that her husband had already flown home and she was returning with their children to him. (The plane was also delayed because my then 7-year-old daughter's name and my brother-in-law's name were on a terrorist list as IRA members.) The fact that everyone flying had Irish surnames, save for one of my sisters, may have been what raised a red flag with my sister and her children. However, to be on the safe side, you may want to always fly with your husband.
Edited: I should have written - If you travel by plane one direction with your husband and baby, you should probably travel the other direction with him, too.

my ped had told me 6-8 weeks, most especially for their immune system to mature (even if you are nursing/had them covered in a sling the whole time it is close germy quarters) and also something about their ears.
We flew across the country with Maria when she was 11 weeks, and she screamed alot during the altitude changes, even with nursing..

We flew to Guatemala with our six-week-old daughter a year or so ago without any trouble. The only problem we had was actually getting her passport on time (we had to go to a special county office to get her expedited birth certificate, then pay the passport office to expedite her passport as well). It was actually a GREAT age to travel with her--she was still sleeping a lot of the time, and she stayed in my sling the entire flight, there and back.

I flew with a 2-month old, 2 years ago. I heard the same thing that Lisa did about 6-8 weeks at least, for the immune system to mature. And, I did keep her covered and in the sling constantly, etc.
I also did her vaccine schedule a bit differently than the others b/c she was going to be on an airplane.

I flew from HI to CA with my oldest when she was 6 weeks old, and she nursed and slept like a dream the entire way. It has never been that easy to fly with my children since!

I flew with one of my sons when he was only one week old. The other was 6 mths old when we did a trip to Europe. Both were manageable. So really, anytime when you are comfortable & the baby is in good health.

I think 2 months was the youngest I've ever flown with, though I've done transatlantic flights with a 4-month-old.
I've never heard of anyone's having trouble flying without their husband -- I flew back and forth from the US to the UK many times with two and three children by myself and no problems.

Our youngest was two weeks old. It wasn't planned like that, but that baby was stubborn and arrived 12 days late, and we had to leave.
There is no age restriction but you do, of course, need a passport if crossing borders, and some kind of ID (like a birth certificate?) might be good to have at hand on a domestic flight.
When travelling in or out of the States alone with children, I now always carry a notarized letter from my husband stating I have his permission to do so, and also permission to get any travel documents I need (as in the case of a lost passport for example). I almost didn't make it over the Canadian border one time with three kids in the back seat. It would have been a major bummer as we had just driven for five days from Alaska to get there. Thankfully a phone call to my husband cleared things up and they let me in!
Have fun planning!

Katie is so right about thinking of the passport. My first dd was born in UK and being British it would have taken several weeks to get a passport. We needed to travel before dd was a week old and were only able to do it because the French issued a passport in London in one afternoon (if you are a foreigner in the country, your embassy can usually do it real quick). The biggest hurdle was how we were going to do the photo for the passport, holding her up and not being too much in the photo - but finally we just placed dd on a white sheet on the floor and they took a shot of her like that. She did not complain in the least.

Mari, we had to do that, too, with our thirdborn, also born in the UK. His passport picture is still this very jowly shot of him as a tiny infant, on the floor of the photo studio. The only problem we had in travelling with him (we came back to the US to have him baptized, because half our family won't get on airplanes) was that, like idiots, we forgot also to get him a visa before we left, and they didn't want to let him back in when we returned to the UK. That would have been interesting -- I had visions of just handing him to the passport agent and saying, "Well, okay. Here you go. See you later, son!" Of course we wouldn't have done that, and getting his passport stamped in the right place was a matter of maybe three minutes, during which the passport agent let us know in no uncertain terms just what idiots we were, but we didn't care at that point.
Getting his passport was also an adventure -- my husband, nice man that he is, went down to London for the day to accomplish this task, only to discover the American Embassy locked up tight. He wondered whether there had been some kind of terrorist threat -- this was 2002 -- until a security guard informed him that it was Columbus Day. Oh. We'd bought our calendar in Cambridge, and Columbus Day wasn't on it. So he had to go down again the next week to get the passport. Comedy of errors all the way, but we did manage to get back and forth without major mishap. Oh, except that when we did get back, the baby was jetlagged and had his nights and days mixed up for the next six weeks or so. THAT was the worst!
But otherwise, no problems!
Sally
