Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have not yet checked the itinerary - we did not get tickets for the mass - but I am considering taking the kids downtown (if dh can get some time off - any ideas of how to catch sight of the Holy Father?

My priest bil sent me this:

PUBLIC POPEMOBILE ROUTES ANNOUNCED FOR POPE’S VISIT

WASHINGTON-Popemobile routes for Pope Benedict XVI, April 16 and 17 in Washington, will include travels along Pennsylvania Avenue, NW and Fourth Street, NE. These routes, especially the motorcade west on Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, present the best way for the public to see Pope Benedict.   The pope’s schedule during his three-day visit to Washington includes events that require tickets.

After the pope’s April 16 visit at the White House, around noon, the pope will travel in the popemobile to the Vatican Embassy on Massachusetts Avenue. From the White House, the route will follow Pennsylvania Avenue to Washington Circle. From there, the motorcade will head toward Massachusetts Avenue through Rock Creek Parkway, to the residence located across from the U.S. Naval Observatory.

The public generally can see the pope from the sidewalks throughout the route. Sidewalks immediately in front of the White House and Lafayette Park, directly across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, will be closed to the public. Washington Circle also will be closed as a viewing location.

Later that day, at approximately 4:15 p.m., the pope will board the popemobile for a second motorcade from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops offices, 3211 4th Street, NE, to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Michigan Avenue, where he will meet with the U.S. bishops. The public can see the pope along this route from the west side of 4th Street, NE and from the south side of Michigan Avenue in front of and across the Street from the Shrine.

On April 17, a third opportunity to see Pope Benedict will be on the campus of The Catholic University of America, as he travels across campus to the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center to meet with faith leaders from many religions. Access to viewing areas on Catholic University’s campus is available only through tickets that the University has made available through local church-sponsored Catholic organizations. Tickets are available in blocks of 50 or more only to local Catholic Church-sponsored organizations (including parishes).

Submissions for blocks of tickets must be sent no later than Thursday, April 10, to papalvisit@cua.edu . Name, address and affiliation are required.

I am torn about this. I hate crowds and traffic, especially with all my kids. But, this is such a great opportunity.

Dh won't want to go. In fact, I think he is taking off work the day of the Mass so that he isn't in the city. He hates crowds and traffic more than I do.

I had the same information from another priest, with this additional information:

Sporadic automobile traffic restrictions or, “rolling closures,” will occur during the pope’s April 16 travel times, affecting the following streets:

Pennsylvania Ave. from 17th ST, NW to Rock Creek Parkway   11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Cross streets one block north and one block south of Pennsylvania Avenue       11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Rock Creek Pkwy from Pennsylvania Avenue to Waterside Drive 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
(Massachusetts Avenue)

Massachusetts Avenue from Columbia Avenue to Observatory    11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Circle (South)

4th Street from 3211 4th Street to Michigan Avenue           3:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Michigan Avenue from Monroe to Irving Street                4:45 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Thinking about it, but in large part it depends on whether it can fit into the schedule with work my husband has planned for that day.

We aren't going to try to catch the Popemobile but I would try for the first ride as it is a very long route with plenty of sidewalk space for onlookers. I have to sort of laugh at the ride from the USCCB to the Shrine. That's a distance of about 1000 feet.

So if we go, I'm thinking we'll Metro into Farragut (West??) walk over to PA Ave. Afterwards, we'll go check out the frogs at National Geographic Museum.

Like I mentioned in the taking a baby to see Pope thread - I would do it in a heart beat if we were anywhere close. I hate traffic and crowds too, but it's such a rare opportunity. What if it's his only US visit? Having seen it before (with JPII) it is very exciting.

One other reason I think it is worth braving the crowds it to show support and solidarity with our Holy Father. Already the general gist of the media coverage we are getting around here is: "all the protests scheduled" and "not everyone happy to see Pope" kind of slant. In the grand scheme you know it's the minority but it's what is going to get the coverage. We need to overwhelm with sheer volume of support and show of love for our Holy Father.

We are heading down, my dh and girls REALLY want to go. I am thinking I may stay back and milk the cow

We (dh) will be staying with friends in Front Royal, then driving to the Metro in the am. Any suggestions where he should plan to exit the metro?

My DH works in DC, and is hoping to have us meet him for the Catholic U popemobile drive in the evening. I am hesitant, since my kids are so young, and being short myself, sometimes it is hard to see the Pope, even in the mobile.
