Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our church became a cathedral some years ago and currently is having a big appeal to raise half the cost of a major building scheme to create a large, posh complex for dining, shopping etc at the cathedral. I can see that it would be nice. We have a typical church parish hall - adequate but not fabulous. I am not comfortable with the fact that half the funds are coming from lottery funding anyway. Our son gave £20 he earned through good deeds in lent, but we have yet to give more.

Giving is a sacrifice for us. And I get appeals for funds to send BIbles to prisoners in Ethiopia or to help feed and educate orphans or give clean water to a village, and I think surely our money is better used there?

What do you think? Do you give to what your bishop advises and asks or to what you think is best?

We are always evaluating our giving. For the first few years of our marriage we had modest but ample income and we tithed (gave 10%) half to our parish and half to other organizations. Usually we gave to a pro-life group or to a community of religious sisters we knew. Things like the Cardinal's appeal or second collections on Sunday came out of the "other" half. We always prioritized the parish. This year we are living on a student loan and we seldom have any income. If there is no income we give some paltry, symbolic amount on Sunday. If we've made some money that week or month the whole 10% goes to the parish. When the Archbishop's appeal came along this year dh did give to it, so I guess our answer is, yes, we give when the Bishop asks. But giving to our parish is always first.

Susan

we usually give what we 'can' to our parish.. usually minimun 5%.. then we distribute the remainder of our donations to charities and causes we choose...
sometimes that may be soemthing like what you wrote above... other times it would be different...

just curious... this dining/shopping complex... is this for public use, or for parish events etc...

We give 5% to our parish. The other 5% we give to charities of our choice. We have a Bishop's Lenten Appeal to which we give a small amount.

Just an interesting thing we did this year that others might find useful. We have been struggling with tithing because we literally have nothing extra after the bills are paid. So, this year we put our tax refund into a charitable gift fund. Each month the fund sends a check to our parish, while the rest of the money earns interest. This way, our giving is already done, before we even saw the money, and hopefully, depending on the stock market, we will make some extra that we can give to the Church as a Christmas gift!

The Diocescan Appeal is what pays my dh's salary. It is scary to ponder how tithing will most likely be the first thing to "go" with the recession...
What a great idea Molly, the charitable gift fund....!!!
