Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do any of you own a dvd recorder, as opposed to using Tivo or some other subscription service? We finally bought a new 26 inch flat screen hdTV. What is very exciting is that our very limited cheap cable service also includes quite a few hdtv channels that we never knew about before! We now have many of the better educational channels that we've never had before, like the History Channel, Discovery, Animal Planet, TLC, The Food Network, etc. But, our old as can be VCR is not compatible with the new TV, so we are in the market for something to record shows on. I refuse to spend the money on a subcription service like TiVo.

I think we'd like a dvd recorder with a tuner, so we can watch one channel while recording another. Anyone have experience with this and willing to make a recommendation? So many of the options on Amazon have VERY mixed reviews. Many of them completely lock up and stop working after awhile. So I could use help in this decision.

Thanks!

Have you asked your cable company? We get our DVR service through Comcast. I think it's no more than an extra $15 a month (much cheaper than the last time I checked out Tivo). But we've had to have the cable box repaired three times in the year and a half we've had it, and we've also had to have the cable people send a ping a few times to reset the cable box because the DVR has locked up.

One of the cable guys told me that the DVR's still have several bugs in them and they keep getting newer editions of the boxes from Motorola all the time. I don't know the glitch rate for Tivo, but I've been very glad to have the service for such a small fee and to have free repair/replacement when the box goes bad.

Irene, We own one. Dh usually does all the recording. He paid up to get a combo VCR/DVD. He's transferring all his videos to DVD, plus he can tape from TV. It's been pretty easy to use and quite handy. My mother also has one and uses it quite often.

Irene,

We are on our second DVR. We prefer this to other options because we really like to record shows of interest to the five adults and one child in the family. We love our DVR! We got this one at Costco IIRC for a good price. I don't remember exactly what my dh was looking for (and he's not available right now) except that he wanted an upscaling one or something.

In Christ,
Deborah

Thanks for the responses, ladies. We don't watch very much TV, so $15 per month on an ongoing basis is still way more than I'm willing to pay for the ability to record things.

Jenn and Deborah, if you don't mind, I'd really be interested in both the make and exact model number of your machines that you are happy with. (And your mom's Jenn, if you know it.) It would be handy to have a VCR too since we still have lots of children's videos that my 5yo enjoys. But it's not necessary.

I've looked at Costco - actually purchased one that I could not get to work with my old TV at Christmas and had to bring it back. That one did not have a tuner, so we would have had to put the TV on the correct channel and leave it while recording. I didn't see this working when we would not be around or if we were recording something and dh wanted to watch the news or something.

Do yours have a tuner? If not, is it a big inconvenience? Because I noticed that a tuner really adds to the price.

Reading the reviews online (Amazon, Best Buy, and Circuit City) makes me want to be sure I get one that someone has had a good experience with because lots of them seem to have the sort of problems that Barbara mentions she's had with her Comcast DVR machine.
