i am in a "detox" mode for our plastics. we have two young kids that still need unbreakable cups and plates. any suggestions for safe, not made in china, full of toxins table ware?

Maybe something along the lines of grannyware--the tin/enameled stuff? Lightweight enough, durable..they might chip, but surely you could find some not MIC.

I was just going to suggest that Rachel. I have been very pleased with the enamelware I have in my kitchen - bowls, bread bin.
We use Corelle. It isn't plastic, it's made in the US, and the kids haven't broken a plate yet. I have used small glasses with my toddlers as well. Someone here on another thread suggested going to the thrift store and purchasing several small glasses that way. Then, when they break, and those will, no worries! Save the nicer glasses for older family members.

I've been looking at the golden rabbit enamelware, but I'm afraid its made in china. It just says "imported." But, it is lead free... I think I would call or e-mail the company and ask where its made before ordering.
We have porcelain tile floors and have lost way too many dishes lately. Nothing breakable stands a chance on this floor.

I use small Mason jars (the jam jars) for cups for all. They can handle quite a few drops.
The Corelle is good but WATCH OUT when it does break- millions of shards everywhere!

but the enamelware doesn't leach into foods like plastic does.. it's right up there with glass and stainless steel for that reason.

I use wooden bowls and plates for my children: and for me too, when dh isn't around to roll his eyes! I was reading the thread on bottles/nursing and that has me feeling sick because our baby has plastic avent bottles - which I HATE but have no option as she is adopted. It is revolting how much plastic children are exposed to.

This is just what we do! 
But, I really am thinking of enamelware or something too. I am getting really sick of cleaning up the broken glass cups.

Have you looked at the SIGG water bottles, baby bottles and sippy cups? We have several and love them. You can see them at the web site of a wonderful family-owned natural products children's store - www.peapods.com.
I'd love to hear about what else you might find in the way of dishes. Keep us posted.

I recently saw a suggestion to use jars for cups, and it also said to put a couple of rubber bands around the jar to make it more "grippy". Would probably work for other glasses, too, and might help eliminate some drops.

Lucy, I was using Avent bottles with my boys when I first read about this, and chucked those, and got some glass ones. Old school nipples only, but they were a bargain. Can't remember where exactly I found them online, but the shipping was low, they came in packs of three, and they are sturdy.
I will look and see if I can find a link to them saved somewhere...

Funny this should come up as I was just thinking about this. The only plastic we use are the children's cups and I want to purge them this weekend. I think I will end up with enamelware, but I don't want to buy a whole set of that before we move. So I decided I'll head down this weekend to one of our many local potters and get the kids and I each a handmade pottery mug or tumbler.They are kind of pricey, but are very sturdy, lovely to look at and hold, and I like supporting our local artisans when I can.

I've used Corelle for just about my entire married life (20+ years). I've had ONE piece shatter on me and that was only after a boy dropped a skateboard on top of it while the plate was laying on the cement basement floor.

Theresa, when we were first married my dh and I always drank out of mugs.
Now with 6 of us I think it would be fun to each pick out a mug we really like and that can be that person's mug. Which means every time a child wants a drink of water they don't have to search for a new cup....(this is the first house we have lived in with a dishwasher and I am constantly running out of things to drink out of !)

Oh, speaking of mugs! I just saw in, I think it was a Monastery Greetings catalog, two handled mugs sold by Trappist Monks. Apparently, little children in France learn to drink from these and the monks use them daily as a reminder "unless on becomes like a little child".
I don't know how expensive they were, but I liked them and considered getting one for myself.

I found the link for Monastery Greetings. Those mugs are too cool. I then looked up Pioneer Pottery, where it says they are made, and they seem to be in Montana. Definitely not China! Thanks for the idea!
