I wanted to check in to let you know that we are OK. We live in North Louisiana and didn't feel any direct effect on our lives. I don't know if you remember but I have mentioned before that I belong to a Community called People of Praise. We have a branch in New Orleans. All our brothers and sisters down there are facing the possibility of being homeless.
Last Saturday we received a call from a brother down there asking if he and his family could come and spend the hurricane at our house. We gladly said yes. They arrived Saturday night thinking they were going to be turning back and heading home at the latest Tuesday. Now is Thursday and they have not idea when they are going to be allowed back to at least inspect the damage. The news aret talking about letting people in their area on Monday. They will be able to get some essentials if they have any left and then they have to leave and won't be able to return again until 4 to 6 weeks from now.
About half of the New Orleans branch of our communtiy is here in Shreveport. So all the families are hosting somebody. It has been a very emotional few days. My family has double in size in a couple of days!
I have now ten people living with us and only one bathroom. Throughout all of this I have been blessed by seeing the faith of my brothers and sisters. They are holding on to their faith and the Lord is really sustaining them We have had a chance to serve one another and put more of our life in common.
The full impact of this on our life remains to be seen. We haven't started school yet. We have to seat down and work at ways to mesh to families together. Thank the Lord we have a lot in common about the way we raise our children. The things that will have to be worked out are the more practical details like bathroom schedule, meals - we have very different taste in food-, sleeping arrangements - the girls think they are on a permanent sleepover status-. They have a lot of decisions to make and they have a lot in their minds.
This feels almost surreal. I have never personally known anybody that has been a victim of a tragedy of this magnitude. I am not a strange to hurricanes. After all I lived in the Dominican Republic most of my life. But people loosing houses and everything they own is something I read in the news not something I am personally involved in until now.
I'll keep you posted as things develop. Thank you for listening!

Natalia,
Please let us know if we can help in anyway.
My neighbors lost everything in a fire last year. Their daughter was able to shop for 2 outifts that same day and just sat and clutched the bag that evening. I can't imagine the feeling of losing everything and having no control.
We are praying!! What a wonderful blessing you are to those in need.

Yes Natalia,
Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help. I have boxes of clothes and toys sitting in my garage, waiting to go somewhere.
What a wonderful example of helping others you are giving your children.
You are all in our prayers.

this looks like a good place to put "check in" news. I just heard from Dr. Mike Artigues, Trisha Artigue's husband. They live in McComb, MS. MIke writes:
Mike here. Trish is on the road with the kids to Colorado via Dallas to visit her sister. We lost many trees and will be without power for possibly weeks but little structural damage to the house and all are healthy. The power is up at the hospital and clinic so I have access to a computer and email. In fact, last night was my first opportunity to see the scope of the destruction on the coast and N.O....very sad.

I'm relieved to hear about Trish. I met her and Mike in Memphis a couple years ago. Very sweet people.
Also, I received this information if you wish to help hsers directly:
PROJECT NOAH PREPARES TO MEET NEEDS OF VICTIMS OF
KATRINA
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, many of you are
rushing to send
help to our friends in Louisiana, Mississippi, and
Alabama. The
recovery and cleanup will be a very long process, and
there are things that
will be needed in the future, but not immediately ...

Our prayers and admiration are with all, Natalia.
As a Public Health Service officer, my husband is informed about plans to serve the victims of this latest natural disaster. Know that there are PHS officers and their families who are eager to help. Deployments continue, to include a wide variety of professionals, including mental health (my husband's area of expertise.) I'll let you know if/when my husband gets called up.
Thank you for keeping us posted. Our prayers continue.
Love,

Natalia,
Our heartfelt prayers are with all those suffering.
My husband and I were wishing that we could open our home to a like-minded Catholic family. The only problems are that we live in Arizona, and we weren't sure how to go about finding a family that would want to come out here. I can't imagine what you all must be going through. I haven't been able to do much at all just thinking about this, and I haven't been personally affected. Please let me know what the immediate needs of your brothers and sisters in the area are. Perhaps there is something we can do to help from a distance. God bless you and all the families who are able to help and have answered the call.

Right now I wished I still lived in Shreveport to be able to open my home to a family in need. Being so far away in Virginia you feel like your hands are tied. I have a whole in-law suite in my basement...right now empty, except boxes. Wish I could transport it down there....
All our thoughts and prayers for all those hurting and helping the Gulf coast.

This might sound silly, but my family has been concerned about the dog-gone Audobon Zoo animals in N.O. What did they do with all the animals? ARe they safe? Where are they?
We've heard nothing. Call us animal-lovers.
We did travel to Jennings, LA this weekend and stopped at the tourist bureau there. The workers there said that the animals at the Aquarium of the Americas in N.O. had all been *secured* before the hurricane but with no electricity or rescue that the water inside would not have any oxidation and all the sea life would probably die.

I heard that the zoo lost on half of 1% of the animals, and all the rest are being cared for now.

the Shreveport Times reported today that most of the animals are fine. They have lost some waterfowl but they hope they will turn up. All the flamingos are accounted for including some young ones that haven't grown feathers yet.
So, I think the story of the penguins is not true

Well, it seemed a bit far fetched but with life up for grabs in NO I couldn't be sure!!
We watched a special on Animal Planet about rescuing the zoo animals after Hurricane Andrew. We have 2 zoos here in Chicago, I wonder if we will take in any animals from NO.

Is the Zoo on the West side?
Must be.
Last time we went to the N.O. zoo was 14 yrs ago.
Kayleigh was 13 months old and Corey was 4 yrs.
They had that dirt mound they built up for the children in N.O. since Louisiana is so flat, children didn't know what a hill was like. I wonder if the dirt hill is still there???
Mark put the kids in turn on his shoulders and ran down the hill with them...let's see, he was 25 yrs old. I wonder if he could still do that today with Annie (age 3) at the age of 40???
