Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dh has surprised me this year He has give me a generous gift of money to buy various gifts for myself

I am planning on indulging myself in a few areas like clothes (badly needed) and books (A real indulgence)
Now my problem is what should I buy??? I feel like I should buy books for me (doesn't that feel selfish) but I do buy for the dc often and haven't bought a book for myself in two years or more. I was thinking of a mother culture one, something to help me feel re-rejuvenated, I have shared before how my hsing and mothering has become uninspired and I'm unmotivated.

I already own a few; my favourites include, Real Learning by Elizabeth, Charlotte Mason Companion by Karen Andreola, and Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit by Terri Maxwell. Oh and I do have A Mother's Rule of Life by Holly Pierlot but frankly it wasn't helpful, it wasn't me.

I thought that since I have last purchased a mothering book there may have been something new on the market or old that I have overlooked. Any suggestions?

I really like the books by Danielle Bean. I have just finished Mitten Strings for God by someone else and it is excellent. It is such a peaceful book and reminds the reader to take time to smell the flowers so to speak with one's children.

I just recently got this book
Quote:

Outnumbered!
Raising 13 Kids with Humor and Prayer

Product Details
To outsiders, the Kuharski family life sometimes looked like controlled chaos. With 13 kids-seven by birth, six by "airport" (adopted)-it sometimes felt that way to family members, too.

There were the vacations when the entire family jammed into one motel room. There were the excuses: "Kari told me she wanted her hair cut that short." "Dominic told me the cement was dry." "Tony said that Grandma said there wasn't any poison ivy in that area." There were the challenges of adopting special needs children and the heartbreak of watching some of those children fail to adapt.

Through it all, by the grace of God, much prayer, and lots of common sense, the family became an oasis of stability and love. Whether your family is big or small, whether you have young children, old children, grandchildren or no children, Outnumbered! will bring you to a place at a very special family table.

I found it to be funny.. things I could actually laugh over.. and I find that to be very refreshing. This book was very much an overview type of thing.. it's not long. She also has other books that I guess are more focused on parenting topics.. I guess I liked this because it was enjoyable and made me feel "less alone" and did still give some good hints on things.. but it wasn't "work" to read. The last thing I need when I'm feeling drug down.. is more "work" no matter how good the book is.

Ok Erin - forgive me for being eternally practical...but I loved The Temperament God Gave You for helping me to know myself, and my husband and children. It has to be one of my all time favs! Then, The Apostolate of Holy Motherhood really helps me focus on that "one thing needful." If you don't have this OOP jewel, I can't recommend it highly enough!

Then, what about a subscription to Victoria just to help keep the prettiness around you. Or maybe, Living Crafts? Don't know if this is your speed, but I am enchanted by the projects and crafts here - though I don't possess the skill to complete hardly one of them.

I confess, I'd buckle and buy kid's books anyway though.

Thank you All of your suggestions sound great. I think maybe I need to go for a more general mothering one and not so much a hsing one. So your books fit. I have just had a chat with an 'older and wiser' mother who recommends that I focus on the positive.

I may have to leave the Victoria and Craft suggestions though Jennifer as they may depress me so not me, I want to be but am slowly excepting it isn't me. I'm NOT buckling though, dh wants this to be for me.

When I buy a book, I want it to be something that I will turn to again and again. My favorite book for moms is Sally Clarkson's Season's of a Mother's Heart. Sally Clarkson is so real and comforting. I often turn to her books and CD sets when I need refreshed.
