Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Without getting into too many details, we are helping someone move and the stuff is in our van, and it will be with us while we drive 6 hours on Thanksgiving. The problem is, the stuff smells like smoke, and my dh has asthma. We do have one of those things that go on top of the van, but it's not waterproof, and we don't know if it's going to to rain/snow on Wednesday.

I need to deodorize the van and need to do it now. (If you have ideas for isolating the smoky stuff, please throw them our way too! -- we're thinking plastic bags, but some are too big to wrap in plastic.) How do I do this? (I do have one spray thingie of Febreze, which I've never used before -- is it really effective?)

Help please.

the febreze does work.. and yes sealing in plastic works...

can you borrow a trailer to pull?

Do you know where your air intake is for the vents? positive pressure might help.. if you can pull in fresh air and have it blowing in your face you could counter the smell.

I'd try plastic bags, febreeze, and leave it open to air out as much as possible. Perhaps during your trip you could throw a blanket over it all to smother the smell for awhile.

Thank you for your suggestions! We did air it out today. And my kids (bless them) cleaned some parts of the van with vinegar and baking soda -- I think it helped. Tomorrow I'll try sprinkling baking soda over the upholstery and carpet, then vacuum, and see how that works. I'll also try the Febreze. I was too scared to try it out earlier without my hubby home -- don't know which would be a good spot to test it on.

Thank you again!

Stef,
One thing that works so well is one of those deoderizer pucks. They come in a little container with a lid. You just take off the lid and let it suck up the smell. You can also close it and reuse it if it wasn't all used up the first time.

We give rides to all sorts of great folks and I have a very sensitive nose. This puck does the trick!
