My 11 dd wants a doll house for Christmas. I have been searching. I really want to avoid one MIC, but I can't spend hundreds of dollars either. So many don't even come with furniture and cost a fortune. This is a child who does so much, and this is all she has asked for so I am willing to stretch a little to get it. But with number 8 due any time now, I can only stretch so much!
Does anyone have a recommendation for a doll house for a child that old? I am watching ebay, but it is just too unreliable.

Hi,
have you looked at local craft stores? they sometimes sell dh kits. our local one even has a lighthouse that i'd love to get for my dad's lake house. another idea is a corner room. it is 2 walls that meet at a corner and a floor. you then decorate the room to be whatever you want. you may be able to find pictures if you look for info on miniature enthusiasts.

I am also looking for a doll house for my twin girls almost 9yrs to share. Here is what I have found so far.
Cherry Tree House These are so different from the traditional doll house but at the same time may have a longer play time.
Magic Cabin What can I say. If I became a "miniture" this company would build my house  . The price is an issue.
Furnished doll house
This Melissa & Doug one I may purchase for my girls. I saw one displayed at a local toystore and even though all of the flooring and walls were sticker like. The assembly looked easy and of good quality. It look appropriate for an older aged child. This site also offers a fully furnished version of this doll house which seems fairly reasonable since it will be a gift for 2.
I have also been looking at the
Calico Critters my girls love animals much more than dolls and I am tempted to get the victorian doll house above and use the calico critters and furnishings!  It could work?
My goal in all of this is to choose the most versitle gift that will be long lasting and won't break the budget  I look forward to watching this post for other ideas. The clock is ticking........

Molly--I personally have no doll house experience  , however I have seen some creative ideas, one of which was two kitchen cabinets stacked on top of one another...it was great. The mom got it at a surplus warehouse, so it was inexpensive. THey were white, and the doors can be shut and she put child locks on them so the younger sibs couldn't destroy things (not that happens in any of our houses ). she bought one of two small items for each shelf/room and then let the child make and collect the rest of her items over time so that it was really open-ended. If you were creative, you could paint the inside or wall paper the walls and paint little rugs on the floor and such...anyway some ideas for thought.
BTW, it's 4:30 in the morning and I'm wide awake in a hotel room where the rest of my family is sound asleep...I've had two cups of java, forgive me if I'm rambling!

I just bought this one this weekend. Out of all the sites that I could find that had this style, it's the only one that 1-had it in stock still and 2-included the furniture. I think whether you have to buy the furniture or not is what can make or break the budget! Also, this site didn't have the caucasian family in stock...so I ordered a different family (now we'll have friends!) and ordered the family here.

I just found this dollhouse with all furniture included. Looks like a winner to me!
