I was just reading the link re: all the recalls for toys containing lead paint: yikes.
My youngest is three months old and starting to chew, but now I'm concerned about giving him toys to chew on. I have a little fabric square, maybe 1 foot square, that has ribbons sewn to it for him to chew on(who knows if that's safe??).
Does anyone have any ideas of things that a baby can chew on that shouldn't be so potentially dangerous?

a teaspoon? mine like the cool metal against their gums.. and stainless steel is pretty safe.

eek I am right with you on this one. My youngest DD is 3 months as well and starting to want to hold on to things and chew. I got out the baby toys from my first two girls and PANICKED. Everything is painted and made in China. I don't even know what to do. She's got two little teeth, so my fingers are out!!! 
I'm anxious to see what kind of responses you get. I'm pretty upset about this toy thing. ::sigh::

Mine loved to chew on a cool,damp washcloth, twisted into a knot. That should be safe.

You can also get a washcloth wet and stick it in the freezer. Or, I would often put an ice cube into the center of a washcloth, twist the washcloth around the cube, and use a rubber band to keep it from falling out. (You should obviously supervise your baby just to make sure nothing comes apart if you do this.) If you make the ice cubes out of chamomile tea (you could just dip the washcloth in this before freezing too), it's extra soothing for a teething baby.

I chucked away all the plastic toys and bought a couple of HABA toys (made in Germany) - the Kringelring and the Trix. I bought from Oompa Toys - they seem a decent place online.

I also chucked all of our old plastic baby toys and rattles (some we've had for 13 years!) and invested in a few HABA for Mark Benedict.
The rosary thing has really got me upset. Molly was on my lap chewing on one of those when I read the story!!  I don't want to throw them out...

So do the wooden teethers really stand up to all the chewing? I'm definitely interested in getting some for my toddlers who are teething their molars right now--we have already thrown out all their made-in-China teethers and don't have much left! But I keep picturing paint scraping off, splinters...
Is Haba the brand most of you would recommend? How durable are they?
I've been using Rubbermaid food storage containers, which the babies really like. They're plastic, but they're clear (unpainted) and made in the USA, so I feel a bit better about that. They also like stainless steel spoons, though they often gag themselves, so I have to watch them carefully.  I'm running out of ideas!

Well I just ordered one of these today as DD is always chewing on my scapular when she is in the sling or in my arms. I am excited to get it as my scapular is taking a beating. She puts everything in her mouth, she is only about 5 mos but already has 2 teeth and 2 more on the way. I have a HABA teether, but I have to admit that I also have some plastic things that she chews on  Perhaps I will take the money we get at Christmas and start to replace all baby toys that get chewed with wood toys. I will say that she also chews on alot of cloth which is safe so I feel good about that.

I just threw away all our old plastic teethers. But with wood I still worry about the paint (even if it's supposedly non-toxic) and what the wood was treated with, etc. I do know someone who sells Discovery Toys and she said that none of their teethers contain phthalates at least. And I'm sure they do not "officially" contain lead, but it seems like you can't trust anyone on that matter!
(FYI, Mothering magazine just had a great article on the 2 main problems with plastic toys/bottles/cups: phthalates and BPA's.)

Hands down favorite teether is a toothbrush in my house. I never thought about it being "unsafe" because we all put them in our mouths at least twice a day...but with the plastic phthalates and BPA thing...anyone know of a non-plastic toothbrush?

I have some HABA teethers that have been thru my 4 girls and 1-2 friends. :) Still in mint condition.
As for durable - we ran over a Haba toy with our Suburban, and did not break.

Ok, I have heard this before, but have always been nervous about baby getting hurt. I know I am probably being a little overboard, but please reassure me that this is safe. Just now at dinner I gave Anna Mary (5mos) a teaspoon to chew on. Dh is worried about her poking herself in the eye with the handle and I am afraid of her jabbing the handle into her mouth and injuring herself. Is this possible?

I've always given my little ones a spoon to keep them occupied if I'm sitting at the table (trying to carry on a conversation with other adults!) and I don't think we've ever had a problem.
Now the plastic forks that my six year old took today and broke the two center tines out of to make weapons . . . those I confiscated. And he wonders why?

babies that can't even stab with a fork well enough to skewer something soft probably are not going to be able to poke themselves all that hard.. especially if they're in a high chair or lap at the table with an adult. So while I won't say they can't poke themselves.. my feeling is that they're so ineffectual that they won't cause damage
