I'm struggling with my oldest ds (13) who wants to dress as scarily as possible. My kids don't like dress as saints on the eve of All Saints for trick or treating here because they have to explain to so many nonbelievers who they are and what that means.
I've offered some alternatives here, but my oldest is lukewarm about it at best and is desperate for me to buy him a ghoulish mask before I change his mind and have him dress in something more tame. Any more ideas?

By the way, I should explain that I gave up the trick or treating fight long ago. Some battles are not worth fighting, especially when your husband indulges them in their love for the whole thing.  Also, when I saw kids who were not allowed to participate woefully watching us from their windows, I knew it was the right choice for our family to let our kids have their fun while they were still young enough to enjoy it.

My kids really want to scare the other children that take try to take a handful of candy. 
We are on a Lord of the Rings kick here so I think we will have at least one Legolas (?).
I am excited about Halloween for the first time in years. My dh will actually be home this year  and that makes it more bearable. In years past I would try to bribe them with all the candy they wanted at a movie theatre. They always wanted to Trick or Treat.

we are going to Mary's . ordering pizza and running after the kids . I hope it dosen't snow
we do Halloween too . I never did like it as a kid I do not like it now . However our kids do . We were not Catholic so we have always been a part of the secular culture I feel it would be more harmful to try and take our children away from thier friends etc. They know I can't stand gory stuff so none of that is allowed . aside from that we do it get it over with and I chuck the candy out by the weeks end . I do not store it or let them hord it for further cavity making
Pascal & Indigo are being nijas which I think is the Japenese version of a Knight
I guess its just not a big deal to me any more I can't focus to much on the I'm a good/ bad catholic issue .I try I try and do what is best for our family
I personally would attend my friends Hindu wedding if I'm invited I don't see there being a difference its between you & God for you and your family .
Indigo is now explaining we are catholic and then there are other chirstians and then there are other things like there is jewsih his exact words
oh now he just asked me how many religions is there in christians Mum ?
On to a new adventure .

does he want to go out and trick or treat, or is he staying at home passong out candy?
one thing we saw one yr, which was so great....
was a house that had a few 'fake' people around in various positions... then one real person sitting in a chair, with a mask etc.. made to look fake as well. after the trick or treaters got their candy, the real person would get up and follow them. usually only older kids and adults with said kids....
but our oldest is only 11 and into pirates... so I dont know what kind of mask/costume to suggest... some of them out there are just so gross....or way too scarey!

When I was in college I took an interesting class called Supernatural Folklore. The professor would only offer it in the fall because that is when Halloween falls. She talked about how Halloween is the most empowering holiday for children, because it is the one night of the year in which they are allowed to "break the rules".
1. They get to walk around after dark.
2. They get to walk around in public wearing a costume.
3. They are encouraged to go up and talk to strangers.
4. They are encouraged to ask for candy and eat it.
I have a certain fondness for Halloween. Maybe it's because it was always a special night out with my dad. I also have fond memories of helping build and working in a haunted house that collected food for charity. (My sister was a guide. My dad worked First Aid. My mom ran the nursery. And I scared people.)
As for your son, maybe you could convince him to go as one of the martyrs that died a gruesome death. You would know who he really is; he could spatter himself with lots of fake blood and be gruesome and gory. (My college room mate always wanted to go as St. Lucy and carry around her eyeballs.)
Or maybe instead of a mask, you could give him a pack of makeup and tell him to get creative with his gore. I doubt he could do much more than a few trickles of blood running out of his lips or eyes. (That's the most I could ever accomplish on my own.)

oh yeah.. there's tons of Saints (martyrs) that should fulfull anyone's desire for gore.. at the church bonfire we had someone who was shot with arrows, we had St. Lucy with her eyeballs.. I would think there's got to be someone headless that could be done.
What about the souls suffering in purgatory?

The "scariest" thing we have ever allowed so far has been a skeleton. But...my son had to make his own costume...so he wore all black and then drew and cut out all the bones and skull from plain white paper. So it to us he looked "cute" but to him, he felt like he had accomplished what he set out.
I agree with Barbara, just give him some makeup and see what he can do himself. At least it's not that Scream mask (I hate that thing!) I think an Orc from Middle Earth would be better than that one!
