Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are going to be leaving soon on a 10 day trip through New York to Vermont. We will be staying in VT for a six days. My husband is attending a conference, but will have afternoons, evenings and one full day free for the six days we are spending in VT.

So. We are trying to consider how we want to use all the wonderful family time we hope to have. This is what we have planned so far:

Day 1: travel to Cooperstown NY. Long day in the car.

Day 2: Cooperstown NY - National Baseball Hall of Fame and touring the town (very fun, I hear).

Day 3: National Shrine of the North American Martyrs; visit and attend Mass.

Day 4: Travel to Stowe, VT, driving by Lake George and stopping to stretch legs at Fort Ticonderoga.

Question about routing: We're being directed to use the local ferry at Ticonderoga to cross into Vermont. I've been warned of traffic and wondered about getting backed up at the ferry crossing. We will not be crossing on a weekend. Anyone know how busy this crossing is? I don't want to get my kids excited about a ferry ride only to dash their hopes.

Days 5 and 6: In Stowe; afternoons and evenings will be free.

Day 7: Free day in Stowe; I have put together an itinerary for a day trip to the Lake Champlain Islands, around in a big circle to Swanton, south to St. Albans and back to Stowe. Are these islands kid friendly? There's a bunch of state parks there. I've never been in this area, so if anyone else has any experiences to share, I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Days 8 and 9: in Stowe; afternoons and evenings free again!

Days 10 and (oops) 11: the long schlep home. Routing question again: Rand Mcnally.com is sending us home via I-89 south, past Montpelier to Route 107, which will take us meandering over into New York, passing through Rutland. We are aiming for the NYS Thruway, ultimately, because we want to stay overnight with my aunt and uncle north of Batavia (an hour east of Buffalo) to break up the trip. Looking at the map that route seems to be as direct as any route is going to be...

God willing all of this will actually happen!    There are so many things to see and do I'd love suggestions to narrow our options for our free afternoons and evenings. Thanks so much!

Patty,

I'm just popping in to say I am extremely jealous! I would love to spend all that time in Vermont. We've driven through Batavia a few times on our way to Buffalo, a cute little town. Hope someone chimes in with some useful information.

I am SO excited to go on this trip. My childhood family visited a long time ago; it's been at least 30 years since I've been there. My husband has never been and neither have my kids. I love an adventure, and this is a big one!

Did you go yet? I was raised in Milton right by the lake. Many of my family members still live up there and I did go to Stowe a few years back. -BlessedBGod JMJ

Actually, we're there, I mean here, right this minute.

Plans are changing (as they usually do). We've been hiking for the last two days while the weather was good so we skipped the Lake Champlain Islands for now. We may drive through the Adirondacks on the way home, heading allllmost into Canada instead of taking the southerly route. I need to Mapquest the trip to see if that's just too far to go in one day. We have family we'd like to see, north of Syracuse, too. Eeek. So many things we'd like to do...

I took a good whack to my backside in the woods today. It was quite wet and I wasn't wearing hiking boots -- stepped on a leaf-covered, mossy rock the wrong way and down I went. We got Advil and Bengay and I'm going to take a nice hot shower soon. I'm sore.    Could have been much worse. My husband thought he was going to be carrying me out of the woods on his back as he watched me going down. I might be arthritic but I'm also well padded!

Oh no. That's awful. You are probably going to be sore for awhile.
Alot of my relatives live around Plattsburg on the border of New York state, Vermont and Canada. It's apple season. We just got two bushels from there from my BIL who just got back from a vacation. What a wonderful treat to have Macintosh apples in the house. God bless you in your travels. You're making me more homesick. :) -BlessedBGod    JMJ

Anne, maybe you would know....would we be crazy to think we could drive through Adirondack Park in one day, coming from Vermont? We want to make it to Syracuse, at least, and we'll be starting out before 2pm. The talk of hitting deer and elk has my imagination running away...

We can see blue sky today, so we're headed up the Mt. Mansfield toll road to the summit. Thank goodness!! I don't think my body can take climbing another mountain this week.
