I nursed my older kids until I was expecting another one so they were both weaned between 19-24 months. Neither one of them slept through the night until they were weaned.
My current baby is 22 months and still getting up twice at night to nurse. I'm tired!!! How do you get a nursing baby to sleep through the night and put himself to sleep without totally weaning?

Melissa,
This may not help, but I would go in to the bedroom when DS woke up, and lie down next to him and rub him for a while, then just stay there until he fell asleep (from crying, usually). After 3-5 nights, most toddlers accept that Mommy won't offer at night. I still would go in to him after that, if he woke crying, and I'd just lie in bed until he was asleep then I'd slip out, or just fall asleep myself and stay until morning.
It's easy for Mom as you still get to lie down.

Hi Kelly,
Thanks for the idea, but I'm pretty sure I won't fit into the crib. It is a funny mental picture though, so thanks for the chuckle !! We've talked about moving him to a big bed so I'll keep your suggestion in mind when that happens.

I first practiced putting the baby to sleep at bedtime/naptime with no nursing. Plus an older baby like yours can understand "lie down now" or "lay on your pillow" as a sort of catch phrase for "now it's time to sleep". I agree with the other poster that after some crying they learn that nursing won't be an option at nighttime. This won't carry over into the daytime if you still want to nurse then. Again, like the other poster, I would stay in the room and sleep in the recliner just for the comfort of my presence.

Melissa, I did this myself a few months ago, with my dd who was 22 months at the time!
She had got to the stage where she was waking 3-4-5 times a night however, the first night i decided to begin the night weaning, she slept through till 4 am. I stuck with my decision, though, went in, picked her up, & held her, telling her 'boobah asleep' (her word! LOL!) She basically cried till i gave up at 6 am & got her up. That was a tiring day
I did the same the next night, then the following nights I didnt pick her up, but stayed in the room. She got the message. I think it took 4 nights. It was hell, i felt so guilty, but, I had to do it to stay sane. She still nurses during the day.
