The other day I came home from shopping in the city (45 min drive for us)and the kids were helping me unload my purchases. I had my head in the pantry when my 22 yr ds tapped me on the shoulder.
"hmmmm" I replied
"Mom, I think you need help. I think maybe they might have an intervention program for people like you." ds said.
"What? What are you talking about?" I asked as I pulled my head out of the pantry.
I looked at him and he was holding 2 new tablecloths I had just purchased.  You see I love tablecloths, napkins and anything to set a pretty table. But I guess recently I have bought a few more than my family thinks we need!
How about you? Are you a tablecloth junkie like me? Should we start a support group?

P.S. In my defense all my recent purchases have been bargain prices (one for $3 and the other $4 and they were brand new!). Its not like I am spending grocery money on a nice table that I can't buy the food now!

Jackie, Judging how quickly my gang can make a mess of a tablecloth, I'm of the opinion that you can't have enough! (I even flip it over to "stretch" my use of one tablecloth!)

Where do you all get your tablecloths? I'm not a junkie, probably need to become one , for a while at least. I'm too picky and can't ever make up my mind about tablecloths. Maybe I'm just shopping in the wrong places.

I'm picky, too. Steph. I have lots of tablecloths, but I look for bargains. Many of mine are hand-me-downs from my mother-in-law and dh's aunt, so there's sentimental value. But I also keep my eye out at antique malls for bargains. A slightly imperfect tablecloth (a few stains, small hole that can be mended) can go for cheap.
I can never have enough white tablecloths. So this antique dealer had a trunk full of white ones she was selling for $4.00 each. I bought 5 at one time, all different textures and sizes. A few months later she still had some for sale, and I bought the final decent 3 remaining cloths. Oxyclean does wonders.

Last summer at a yard sale I found 15 vintage table coverings for a dime each. Hit the yard sales and thrift shops, many people have no idea what they are giving away. And, as Jenn stated Oxyclean is wonderful!
As for napkins well......there I am a junkie! I sew them for every holiday and season. I will cut up any interesting fabric remnant or garmet to make interesting cloth napkins.

I'm a wannabee junkie. My tastes are too expensive and I have to resist. I want pretty much every tablecloth sold by 10,000 Villages, but so far I just have one.

Maryan, maybe it's a boy thing...because I'm in the same boat...I have to put a new tablecloth everyday, then switch it after lunch to the other side for dinner...I wash and line dry on saturdays...table cloths and napkins, towels, and sheets! and it still feels nearly impossible to always have a lovely table...and the pulling and tugging...makes me crazy! But I won't give up, I like them and I'm going to have my girly way no matter what!

Can someone explain the appeal of tablecloths? Is it just that they are pretty?
I NEVER use one because it makes too much laundry. I'd rather just wipe off the table after every use. Is there a good reason I should be using a tablecloth, or is it just a matter of personal taste? (I am home management illiterate, so I depend on you all to educate me.)

I am mortified if my family eat without a tablecloth, I just can't help it my mum brought us up that way too. My family don't get it but they humour me. Having said that, I ended up buying plastic to go over the tablecloths as I was washing after every meal and having to soak continually for stains.

I always use a table cloth here too! Part of the reason is that my mil and dh's grandmother sewed and embroidered many of them. The other reason is that we have a table that was handed down from dh's great grandmother that is over 100 years old and I'm trying to protect it from my gang! I have some cheapies that I use on a daily basis, 3 to be exact - one on the table, one in the wash, one in the cupboard. I rotate through them. But on special occasions I like to use a hand-sewn one, or one that has some sort of emotional tie. I have to wash mine after each use as well. My boys really know how to mess them up.
Yes, I am a table cloth junkie!

I love them too BUT they are always being pulled or slip off. Not completely but after 7 busy children eat, it is hanging halfway to the floor on one side. THey all hate them and dh too. I don't use them much because of this and because of the spills, which seems to occur at every meal.

I don't use them either. We now have an oval table so my old rectangular cloths don't fit. The main reason though is I love the look of the wood. I just cannot cover it up. We don't use place mats either.

Here's how and why I use tablecloths: My kitchen table. My kitchen table is GREAT for homeschooling, but not attractive.
My dining room table has great wood, but it's not kid friendly, so I keep that covered too!
Then to seem even more psycho -- I'll tell you that we homeschool right on our kitchen table so in order for there to be fast clean-up between breakfast, snack, lunch, and snack.... I actually rotate tablecloths etc: tablecloth for dinner (shake it out), flip it for breakfast, take it off, do school, put out placemats for lunch, remove for more school, etc.

I don't use the tablecloth for everyday use. Ds still pulls and yanks and it's a disaster. The dining room table is always covered, and for guests I cover the kitchen table.

Not sorry I asked -- this is interesting. I'm definitely of the Mary Chris school of thought -- I like wood better than fabric, looks-wise, so it never occurred to me to cover it up. Not to mention the laundry -- I am so anti-"extra" laundry it's ridiculous. I do use cloth napkins for company, though.

I love seasonal tablecloths. They make me happy just looking at them. But we haven't used one in ages. My baby girls didn't pull them off so I had a great season with them, but my now 2 yr old ds is a disaster near tablecoths so mine are all packed away at the moment.
I also have a hard time finding tablecloths long enough for my table (108 in. when it shrinks becomes too short).

My wood was beautiful eleven years ago. Now, it's trashed. Hot plates, spilled drinks, occasional glue...
Then, it was pretty five years ago when I stripped it and painted it and stenciled it. Now, it's trashed. Hot plates, spilled drinks, peeling paint...
Tablecloths! At least until next summer when I plan to paint again.

I love tablecloths also but I am NOT a junkie. I hate (or should I say strongly dislike) ironing more than I like tablecloths so unless they are one of those no iron ones, I don't use them.
I do try to change the tablecloths according to the liturgical seasons. And since I buy the easy to wash, no wrinkle, microfiber ones washing them and drying them is no problem and, I find that a lot easier than wipe the table or washing several placemats.

Hello, I'm Alice and I love tablecloths!
I have a large table (A blessing from the Lord last year) and they are expensive at that big size.
If I had money, I'd be buying a new tablecloth constantly.
I put heavy heavy plastic over the table cloth. I buy the pastic at Wal-mart in the fabric department. It is the kind used to sew plastic slipcovers. It works well and you can wash it too.

I love tablecloths, but dont have many. Like Alice, I cover mine with the plastic cover  because otherwise we'd have serious stains!
Our table is old and the wood has marker all over it from where it was once in an auction. DH thinks it is a table he bought for $1 when he was 6 years old (he was at an auction with his mother and got excited by the bidding) so there is a cute tale to go with it!
I am intrigued by those who make their own napkins... how do you do it? Is there a special technique? I want to make some autumn looking ones, but am not sure where to start!
