We've never done bedtime snacks before, but my 7 year old son has started the "eating us out of house and home" stage (I can't imagine what he'll be eating as a teenager!! ). Based on his activity level (high!) I do believe that he is truly hungry again, but I'm just in the habit of "kitchen closed" after dinner clean-up is complete. Since the others are still awake when Matthew's hunger bells go off, of course they all want something.

Any ideas for something quick, easy, healthy?

Thanks!!

Molly,
I almost always offer carrots or apple slices. They're quick and don't leave a mess and if someone isn't really hungry they'll usually pass that snack up

If he can eat peanut butter do that. Either on crackers or just smeared on a piece of bread and fold it over. I find that it satisfies the hunger for longer. Another good one is a banana. Comes in its own package and fills up the tummy quickly.

All the above ideas are great. Our 7 yo son likes butter bread (love that fat!!), prunes, pre-cut apples from the fridge, and graham crackers with an inch of peanut butter between them (he makes them himself and eats every bit!)

Remember when we used to worry that they didn't eat enough???

Egg nog sounds great!

How about a cold, hard-boiled egg? It's quick, tasty, and will help with a hunger pang.

You are all such nice mommies! My kids get plain bread and water! You know they're hungry if they just eat plain bread!

Of course my dh and I tend to have a bowl of cereal before we go to bed!

We started the bread thing to discourage the night time eating. Now it is an integral part of the bedtime routine. Everyone takes a slice of plain bread to bed with them. No drinks either but they still want the bread.

For me, it is ice cream once they are all tucked away. And I wonder where all this extra weight is coming from!

Molly,
My melancholic 7ds has needed a steady flow of food in his tummy since birth. Not so much big fill-ups, but just enough to keep him from being grumpy. We found bedtime snacks to be essential to him sleeping through the night as well.

His favorite was tuna on crackers (we used Almond Nut-thins from Blue Diamond, yummy!), but we have also been happy with the following:
  • bananas! of course!
  • cheese on crackers
  • PLAIN yogurt w/a splash of smucker's strawberry sauce in it
  • no sugar bfast cereal is a favorite of ours too

My son has gotten into making toast w/butter before bed lately too. He can do it all himself so it is easy for me.

My husband and I LOVE to order a late evening pepperoni pizza after the kids have gone to sleep. However, my nursing baby won't tolerate the cheese so I'm now dairy and late night pizza free...

Popcorn and ice cream are mainstays around here...especially on movie nights.

For some reason I remember my mom always making homemade fudge as a special treat...and dad would get out the old home movie screen and wind up the old silent home movies. Such wonderful, old-fashion fun back then!

I wouldn't have thought of egg nog had Macbeth not mentioned it. The only time I ever think to buy it is around Christmas time. We have it many, many, many times per week in wintertime. All my kids love egg nog.    Hot cocoa is made on the alternative nights.

Sorry, Molly. You were looking for healthy snacks, weren't you?      I always read things backwards.

Thanks for the ideas! I bought a huge bunch of bananas at Costco yesterday, so we'll try that for a few days. Dear Matthew would rather DIE than eat a carrot, and I don't want to make the snack too attractive (like popcorn) where everyone will come to expect another meal out of me at 8pm . We'll see how it goes...

Thanks again!

Molly,

I tend to find things that are easy for children to get themselves - little packest of sultanas, pop a crumpet into the toaster and spread with vegemite, pour dry cereal into a bowl and munch, grab one of the homemade cookies and some milk, a mini yogurt.

That way, I don't have to be "on" for the bedtime snacking - exccept when I decide to make everyone (who wants) a hot Milo.

Leonie, I have NO idea what you just said ! What are sultanas, crumpets (like a biscuit?), vegemite or milos? I'm all for the do-it-yourself, though!

(I really do want to know what those other things are!)

Sorry to answer for Leonie, but I found some interesting sites online you might like. All of Leonie's suggestions look excellent:

Milo

Vegemite

Sultanas

Crumpets

Alice,

You are always on top of things! I actually made crumpets once (I googled until I found a recipe I liked) -- they're English-muffinish and delicious!

Thanks, Alice, for clearing this up! I'm still curious about vegemite, though--is it like butter? Not nutritionally, but in color and texture? Taste? I'm not sure my local grocery would carry it, but it'd be interesting to try!

Vegemite can be ordered in the US and is distributed by Kraft. I've never tried it, although I have heard of it before. Step back in time with me now my friends--come on you 1980s crowd, you know who you are. Raise your hand if you remember these immortal lyrics:

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, do you speak-a my language?
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said
I come from a land down under . . . .
